What is the battery packaging combination and design purpose?

A battery is an important device meant for charging purposes that stores chemical energy into electrical energy. It is widely used in laptops, mobile phones, vehicles, and other things to get the desired outputs. A well-designed battery should support all the devices and engines in vehicles. On the other hand, it is wise to know what battery pack and battery pack design help enhance the performance of a battery.

A battery pack plays an important role in storing electrical power that supplies power to an electrical system in an electrical vehicle. It has modules that include a small number of cells that are all connected in parallel or series. They usually have a low voltage and are made of a wide range of components.

A battery pack design should meet the energy requirements of a system. Furthermore, the pack architecture will help battery designers determine the design and implementation of BMS (battery management system) and thermal management systems. Another thing is that it acts as a foundation for design workflows with the latest software applications.

What are the things to include in a battery pack design?

1. A Better Package for the Brand Label

Battery manufacturers should evaluate a customer’s specifications at the start of the design process. Benchmarking a battery pack design is the best way to develop a roadmap for new products. A battery pack design should include important components such as cell assembly, material activation, electrode coatings, lead times, temperature sensors, microcontrollers, BMS, etc.

Understanding the cell in detail is necessary in the battery pack design process because it helps to gain more advantages. They include prismatic, pouch, coin, and cylindrical formats that give ways to proceed further. When designing a battery pack, a manufacturer should determine the type with more attention. For instance, a 12V battery pack is suitable for low-energy applications. Similarly, a hybrid battery pack is smaller in size when compared to an EV battery and ideal for complementing the combustion engine.

Before designing a cell, a manufacturer should create two important documents, namely the specification of the product and the safety data sheet. A specification of a product should include important elements such as voltage, capacity, size, type, application, milliampere-hours (mAH), markings, etc. In the same way, a safety data sheet should include some important things, such as an installation manual, a maintenance manual, an operational manual, and a manufacturing record book.

A battery should cater to the requirements of users, and a manufacturer should offer solutions for overheating and other issues. It should focus more on durability, weight, temperature control, and other features to establish a high reputation among consumers. Hence, a battery manufacturer should consider designing a better battery package for consumers to establish its brand in the market. A battery label should contain the necessary information while selling a product.

2. Connecting Batteries in Series

A single cell in a battery is not suitable for some devices, and wiring batteries will result in more advantages. At the same time, it is necessary to know the series connection of a battery in detail. A series connection is a technique that refers to connecting the positive terminal of one cell to the negative terminal of another cell, which forms a new battery. The primary advantage of connecting batteries in series is that it provides ways to increase the voltage, but the overall capacity remains the same. For instance, if you connect two 12V batteries in series with a 150Ah capacity each, the capacity is still the same: 150Ah. However, the voltage will become 24 volts, which will help achieve optimal results.

Anyone who doesn’t know how to connect batteries in series should get guidelines from experts or other sources. They should first make sure that the batteries they want to connect have the same voltage and amps to create a battery bank. The next step is attaching a jumper cable to the negative terminal of one battery and clamping the cable to the positive terminal of the other battery.

Using jumper cables helps connect the batteries in series, depending on the application. When connecting lithium batteries in series, one should follow some precautions to avoid overheating and overcharging. A battery management system (BMS) is necessary to balance the voltage of each battery when connected in series.

3. Protecting a Battery From a Short-circuit

A battery may face short-circuit problems when the anode and cathode of a battery involve direct connections. An internal short-circuit can occur within a battery due to improper installation, physical damage, or other issues. On the other hand, an external short-circuit appears due to damaged wiring or faulty connections. Preventing a battery from both internal short-circuits and external short-circuits will help enhance the functionality of an electrical system to a large extent.

A battery pack design should have a battery management system (BMS) to prevent short-circuits. It provides ways to monitor individual cells within a battery pack. The primary advantage of BMS is that it provides ways to lower damage, prolong life, and run a battery within its safety limits.

BMS is crucial for a battery because it plays an important role in measuring different things such as temperature, voltage, amps, coulomb counts, and current. It helps to improve the health of a battery by adjusting it during operations. Battery thermal management, which is an important component of BMS, provides ways to control the energy flow within a battery system.

Furthermore, it keeps the operating temperature within the specified range, thereby showing ways to control the cells with high efficiency. For instance, a drop in cell voltage can lead to an increase in internal resistance. In the same way, a sudden increase in temperature can result in a thermal runaway event in a battery pack. BMS offers solutions for these problems that help improve the performance of a battery. Another important safety feature of BMS is cell balancing, because not all cells function equally. One cell may become stronger or weaker than the others. Cell balancing provides methods to maintain equal charge between individual cells based on their capacities.
