What is the difference between a polymer lithium battery and a lithium-ion battery?

Appearance of Lithium-ion Battery

As compared to a polymer lithium battery, the appearance of a lithium-ion battery is the opposite. Instead of being wrapped in a flexible foil-type case, lithium-ion batteries are available in hard steel case. To keep the electrodes pressed together tightly, it is necessary to use a hard cover for lithium-ion batteries. 

Lithium-ion batteries are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, but you will always find them in a hard steel case because it is necessary for their cells so they can perform well. 

While getting recharged, a lithium-ion battery would get a little heated up as compared to a polymer lithium battery. 

Cell Voltage Difference Between Polymer Lithium Batteries and Lithium-ion Batteries

The cell voltage of a battery depends on its size. The polymer lithium battery and lithium-ion batteries are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, so there would be a difference between the cell voltage, too. 

The cell voltage of a polymer lithium battery that is either 3.7V or 4.2V means that it would have a maximum voltage of the cells of 3.7V or 4.2V. Again, the cell voltage of a polymer lithium battery depends on its size and the chemistry that has been used while designing and manufacturing it. 

Let's talk about a lithium-ion battery that has a 3.7V cell voltage doesn't mean that it is 3.7V, but it can vary between any voltage, but 3.7V would be the limit. So, this is the difference between a polymer lithium battery and a lithium-ion battery: the cell voltage of a polymer lithium battery would be the one that has been mentioned on it. This won't be the same scenario with lithium-ion batteries. 

Different Sizes of Cells will Have Different Voltages

You will find polymer lithium batteries, mostly with a 3.7V or 4.2V limit, which would be the limit of their cell voltage. Lithium-ion batteries are available in more sizes and shapes; therefore, their cell voltage varies from one size to another. 

Plus, the cell voltage mentioned on the lithium-ion battery doesn't mean that it would be the cell voltage present inside the battery. The cell voltage will be anywhere, but the cell voltage mentioned on the battery would be its limit. 

The availability of lithium-ion batteries in different sizes and shapes makes lithium-ion batteries a better option than polymer lithium batteries or any other type of batteries available in the market.
