What is a polymer lithium-ion battery?

Dec 12, 2023   Pageview:263

Lithium-ion batteries are getting all the attention but for all the right reasons because they have been designed and manufactured to last long with other high-tech latest features that make them the best option as compared to all other options available. Polymer lithium-ion battery is a type of lithium-ion battery that is rechargeable. Yes, you won’t have to replace the last polymer lithium-ion battery once the power stored inside it is drained.

The life cycle of a polymer lithium-ion battery totally depends on the usage, how, much recharge it, and for what kind of electrical device you have been using it. The life span also depends on the maintenance of the battery, but usually, it has 300-500 cycles of life span. It means a polymer lithium-ion battery would last for 10-17 months if you are using it and recharging it on a daily basis. Polymer lithium-ion batteries are also called LiPo.

Principle of Polymer Lithium-ion  Battery

The design, operation and manufacturing of all types of lithium-ion batteries is almost similar. The basic principle on which polymer lithium-ion batteries work is the deintercalation and intercalation of lithium ions between positive electrode materials to negative electrode materials.

Liquid Electrolyte to Recharge the Battery

The major difference between polymer lithium-ion battery and other lithium-ion batteries is that it consists of lithium-ion tech and uses polymer electrolyte instead of any liquid electrolyte. A polymer electrolyte is a solid solvent that moves ions between the electrodes of the battery possible.

The properties of both a polymer electrolyte and a liquid electrolyte are the same because they both play the same role.

Advantages of Polymer Lithium-ion Battery

You wouldn’t want to run out of energy backup and leave your work on hold, and for that reason, it is necessary to have the best batteries in your usage. Polymer lithium-ion batteries are a good option so far for the following reasons:

4 Times More Energy Density

There are many other types of batteries available, like nickel metal hydride and nickel cadmium, but if you compare the energy density of all these batteries, then there would be nothing in front of LiPo batteries. Yes, LiPo batteries have got 4 times more energy density than all these types of batteries. It means you will be able to get more energy stored in polymer lithium-ion batteries, and they will last for longer hours.

Light in Weight and Pliable

Polymer lithium-ion batteries being light in weight are also a plus point for these batteries to be superior then other batteries. They are more flexible as well, and therefore, they are the best option for portable devices that require energy so you can operate them.

Customized Size and Shape

You won’t be able to use the same size and shape of battery in all the electrical devices, and therefore, you will have to look for more options. Well, you can customize the size and shape of polymer lithium-ion batteries according to your requirements and needs. They are more flexible to design and mold according to the need of the hour, and this feature comes in pretty handy.

A Safer Option With Solid Electrolyte

Most of the batteries consist of a liquid electrolyte, and they are not ideal for many reasons. On the other hand, you will find a solid polymer electrolyte in a polymer lithium-ion battery that makes it the safest option so far.

The battery won’t have to face any short-circuit and it won’t explode certainly. Yes, when the electrolyte is liquid-based, there will be consequences and threats. This won’t be the case with a LiPo battery because it has solid electrolyte so it won’t heat up or explode or cause any other damage to the other components of the battery.

Higher Lifespan

You get a battery backup, not to replace them within a few months again. You would like to have a battery with a higher lifespan, and this is the case with polymer lithium-ion batteries. As compared to other rechargeable batteries, LiPo batteries have a longer lifespan depending upon the size and energy storage details of the product. If you pay a little more attention to the maintenance of the battery then it might even last longer than you can think.

Application of Polymer Lithium-ion Battery

If we talk about the usage of polymer lithium-ion batteries, then you would be a little astonished to know that the list is quite long. Yes, LiPo or polymer lithium-ion batteries are widely used in a variety of electrical devices.

You can find these batteries in your mobile phone, laptops, power banks, portable electrical devices that require energy backup to work, and the list goes on. Well, LiPo batteries are not only famous for these small devices, but nowadays, companies that have been designing, manufacturing, and selling electronic cars also prefers to install LiPo batteries in their product.

E-mobility

With the e-mobility revolution, people prefer electric rides that are good for the environment, and therefore, they prefer to have the best batteries installed in their rides that would last long. So, polymer lithium-ion batteries are heavily used for this purpose.

The tech is still progressing when it comes to the batteries to make e-mobility the ultimate thing and completely replace the old transportation. To date, polymer lithium-ion batteries have been the best option so far.

energy storage

Batteries are to be used to have a power backup all the time, whether for residential or commercial use. Polymer lithium-ion batteries are used to store energy while using renewable energy resources to run the operations when you run out of electricity.

Aerospace and Military Applications

Polymer lithium-ion batteries are surely helping aerospace and military operations to keep running and never run out of energy backup. LiPo batteries are also used in aerospace and military applications like drones, satellite phones and other devices that require electricity to perform.

Final Words

Polymer lithium-ion batteries are a better option as compared to other batteries like nickel metal hydride or nickel cadmium because polymer lithium-ion batteries have more energy density. These batteries are already widely used in a variety of devices like cell phones, laptops, video game consoles etc.
