A special working group investigating how Western Australia succeeded through the "generational after generation" of lithium battery and battery mining booms will make recommendations to the state government within six months.

Yesterday, before the two Tesla demonstration X-type electric vehicles, the team was announced in Maylands, Mining Minister Bill Johnston said that the downstream processing of lithium batteries and other battery minerals in Western Australia may create thousands of high-skilled, high-income Job position.

He said that a special working group composed of senior government representatives will engage with companies working in the department and receive advice from industry reference organizations.

It will submit a list of recommendations to the state government in November on how best to capture the lithium-ion battery.

A strategy will also be developed to make Western Australia a world leader in new energy materials.

Mr. Johnston pointed out that the state government has promised the Washington Institute of Minerals $5.5 million to establish a new energy industry cooperative research center in Washington.

The Community Rehabilitation Center is a federally-supported program designed to connect researchers to the industry and create business opportunities.

Lithium and other commodities such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, graphite and copper found in Washington State are key components of lithium-ion batteries that drive electric vehicles.

Several companies have announced plans to process lithium and other minerals into higher value battery precursor materials such as lithium hydroxide, lithium carbonate and nickel sulfate.

Mr. Johnston said that Washington has all the elements to produce lithium-ion batteries, which means it is in the box seat of the electric car industry.

We are determined to take advantage of this opportunity and the working group will develop a clear plan to establish Western Australia as a global leader in the industry,” he said.

The Australian Regional Development Authority issued a preliminary report that made Western Australia a “Lithium Valley” for new energy, similar to how Silicon Valley is known as the global hub, and the Australian working group was established at the right time Science and technology department.

It also received a report from the mining and exploration company last week that called on governments to play a leading role in securing Western Australia's shares in the new energy revolution.

AMEC CEO Warren Pearce said Washington needs to attract international companies with battery mineral technology, and the working group will ensure that there are no regulatory barriers to slow down the industry.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. WA has never seen iron ore since the 1960s – today’s announcement is the first step in positioning ourselves to move further along the value chain,” he said.
