FedEx is using a fuel cell electric truck to transport cargo, the first fuel cell electric truck used on a North American road, according to foreign media reports. The zero-emission truck is a cooperative project between the Workhorse Group and PlugPower. It is based on a Workhorse-based electric vehicle and uses PlugPower's hydrogen fuel cell for charging.

The truck is currently used by FedEx's department in Menands, New York, for standard distribution routes. The WorkhorseEGEN truck is designed to perform all-electric operations at short distances and known occupancy ratios. The new fuel cell from PlugPower will increase EGEN's range by 166 miles.

The fuel cell unit reached a total of 3,000 miles(4,828 km) in the initial test and is expected to increase by an additional 27,000 miles(43,452 km) over the next six months.

FedEx hopes to use the truck during the normal working cycle and can use it in all types of bad weather and driving conditions.
