Lithium ion batteries also known as li ion batteries are most efficient conductors to store energy and pass it to the devices and help them to run. These devices do not require a direct electric connection after having lithium ion batteries inside them. We have seen many other batteries and cells, used to run small devices however after the invention of lithium ion batteries, rest of the inventions become inoperative. The first ever invented batteries having lithium ions in them were 18650 battery cells are smaller in size and usually used in cameras. The best thing about them is they have extremely capacity to store current while they are able to get recharged. After that bigger sized batteries with lithium ions were introduced and now they are being used on widest levels in the industry manufacturing smartphones and laptops.
Are lithium batteries temperature sensitive?
Despite of being extremely efficient and having great storage capacity of energy, lithium ion batteries have so many limitations. Such as, they are not allowed for air freight deliveries in huge amount. You need to take extreme measures while transporting these batteries or taking them with you in planes. Such as, batteries must not be unpacked and you need to have professional photography license to take lithium ion batteries with you during traveling. Another condition is, the batteries should be inside their original packaging to take during air travel. Lastly, these batteries should be installed inside the devices while moving from one place to another through air.
Why is that so? Well, this is because of the temperature sensitivity of lithium ion batteries.
What Is Temperature Sensitivity?
Temperature sensitivity is a term used for those things that change their nature, temperament, or performance due to high slight changes in the temperature for example lithium. Lithium is a soft silvery alkali metal, has chemically known as Li and has atomic number as 3. It is present in the biological system naturally and according to a research, lithium is available in enough quantity to be used for next 3000 years. Coming back to the point, ions of lithium are extremely sensitive in nature that they keep moving in their magnetic field even at room temperatures. Now, in li ion batteries, lithium elements or ions are used in the most quantity. Therefore, the batteries obtain temperament of lithium and become temperature sensitive.
How does cold affect lithium ion batteries?
Batteries being used in our mobiles, laptops, cameras, and various other portable devices are produced by using lithium ions. These batteries store current and give enough energy to devices for running, for a longer period of time. These batteries are recharged by plugging them in the socket with direct current for some time and they become ready to use once again. These batteries are efficient in working, long lasting in life, and produce energy for extended periods of time. However, one requires to adopt precautions while using, charging, storing, or transporting these batteries due to their temperature sensitive nature.
Following lines comment upon the how lithium ion batteries are temperature sensitive:
· lithium batteries Can Lose Their Life To Over-Charging:
The lithium ions inside the batteries are so sensitive to temperature. They start moving at higher speed when the charge is given to them. Therefore, we need to keep an eye over the charging time-period. If these batteries remain plugging in for too long, the temperature of the batteries increase. They either start to bloat up and get swelled or a fluid starts coming out of them. Swelled batteries are out-of-order batteries that have no life remained in them. Besides, the fluid leakage means, life of the battery is leaked. This fluid can further harm the nodes of your device where batteries are put in. Therefore, lithium ion batteries are not charged for too long.
· At what temperature do lithium ion batteries explode?
When lithium ion batteries are charged for too long, they start getting hot. When we don’t take good care of the batteries for too long, they start to bloat, bloat, and bloat. However, when these swelling are not addressed for too long, in the end, these temperature sensitive batteries get blast. These blasted batteries can also harm the devices, place, and even burn a person that’s near to these batteries while getting blast. Temperature with more than 1,000° F can be the reason of lithium ion batteries blasting.
· Lithium Ion Batteries Cannot Be Stored In Basements:
Lithium ion batteries are extremely sensitive to temperatures that they start getting hotter even at rooms with a little higher temperature. This is the reason, lithium batteries are not recommended to be kept inside the places having higher temperatures. Basement have more temperature due to being on the lowest boundaries of them home in summers while have low temperature than other rooms in winter. Therefore, lithium batteries are not recommended to store here.
· Lithium Ion Batteries Cannot Be Kept In Direct Sun:
Besides this, lithium ion batteries are also not recommended to keep in direct sun shine such as in yards or terraces. The rays of sun are too hot and when they come in contact with lithium ion batteries, become reason of rays in the temperature of batteries. This ray in temperature can damage and disturb the overall performance of the battery.
What Makes Lithium Ion Batteries Temperature Sensitive?
Basically, ion so of lithium is so light. They are never at rest and are moving continuously inside a magnetic-filed to and from to and from negative charge. This movement gets elevated even when they come in contact with little arises in the temperature and gets stop when they come in contact with lower temperature.
Conclusion:
This rise or decline in temperature can damage the health of lithium ion batteries. Therefore, precautions should be opted while storing lithium ion batteries for more than one day or weeks. By taking right measures, we can extend the life of these batteries as well as life of the devices use lithium ion batteries. Moreover, we can also keep our self from bearing accidents. Hence, we will be saving money and lives both, by taking care of the temperature of temperature-sensitive lithium ion batteries.
