For those who have no idea what the Battery Management System or BMS as it is popularly called is known for, this article will help in analyzing what it is all about.

The BMS is used in protecting batteries during the periods of discharging and charging. When charging, BMS will track the voltage of every cell and balance the cell group to make sure they are equally charged.

For discharging, BMS will track the voltage of every one of the cells and also the complete pack voltage as well as the discharge current.

A majority of BMS are challenging to install due to the fact that one would need to solder them on the wires. A much simpler BMS to install is the one that comes with 6” of high-quality silicone wires that are already linked.

However, you must be decent when using the soldering iron if you need to extend the wires.

Nevertheless, the world keeps shifting far from fossil fuels, and it will become completely electric. Currently, 18650 batteries are the most promising chemistry when it comes down to batteries.

Most of its battery packs are used in:

· Drones

· Laptops

· Medical devices

· E-bikes

· Electric cars

· RC toys

· Power tools, etc.

They are among the most mature li-on formats that are available and manufactured in very high volume, and they enjoy low costs per Wh. Also, 18650 batteries are a size category of lithium-ion batteries.

They are basically the same shape but just a little bit bigger than AA batteries.

Battery Management System Specification

The whole process of BMS means totally different things to so many people. However, for some, it is just battery tracking, keeping a check on major operational parameters while charging and discharging like currents and voltages as well as the ambient temperature and internal battery.

Nonetheless, the tracking circuit will regularly offer inputs to the safety of the device’s that would produce alarms or basically disconnect the battery from the load or the charger in case any of the parameters get out of limits.

Basically, BMS comes in diverse varieties, and there are three major objectives that are common to every BMS. They include:

· They protect the battery or the cells from any form of damage

· They prolong the battery lifespan

· They help to maintain the battery in a state in which it can easily fulfill the operational demands of the application for which it was initially specified.

The battery Management system has amazing effects on the complete vehicular protective operation. The functions that BMS can achieve are:

· Detection of the battery temperature

· Calculation of battery SOC

· Detection of batteries that are operating electric current

· Detection of the monomeric battery voltage

· Insulation resistance detection, etc.

· BMS interacts with the charger to safely attain the battery charge

The Benefit Of Battery Management System For 18650 Battery

Some of the benefits of BMS to 18650 batteries include:

· It protects battery cells or the battery pack from getting damaged

· It prolongs the lifespan of 18650 batteries

· It maintains the battery in a state in which it can fully attain the function of the specified application

· It tracks the battery cells temperature and manages the temperature in a very conducive area

· It aids in monitoring the real-time information of the battery, and it shuts down the power immediately there is any short circuit

· In charging, BMS would track and estimate the charging voltage to prevent higher voltage from damaging the battery

· When it is discharging, BMS monitors and calculates discharging current to prevent the battery when it gets smaller than the functioning voltage.

How To Build A Battery Management System For 18650 Battery

Some of the tools and parts needed for this construction of a battery management system for a 18650 battery will be listed below. The parts include:

· The 18650 battery

· Ni Strips

· Battery level indicator

· DC Jack

· 18650 battery holder

· 18650 battery, etc.

While some of the tools to be used include:

· 3D printer

· Spot welder

· Hot air blower

· Li-ion charger, etc.

After getting the necessary tools and parts, you will need to select the right 18650 cells to purchase in the market. They are of different types, and the ones that are highly recommended are those from branded companies such as LG, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.

In order to construct the battery pack, you will need to link the 18650 cells together via the nickel strip or thick wire. In connecting the 18650 cells, you will need to either solder or go through spot welding.

However, spot welding is the best option though it is expensive when compared to a top-quality soldering iron. Before you connect the cells, you will have to check each distinct cell voltage.

For the paralleling cells, the voltage of all the cells must be close to one another if not, an increased volume of current will instantly flow from the cell with a high voltage to that of a low voltage.

Finally, when you are ready to build the battery with BMS, you will, first of all, install every component into the distinct slots in the 3D enclosure. Then, solder the positive red wire from the DC Jack as well as the rocker switch.

Next, apply glue that is hot at the base of the compartment of the battery and then protect the battery pack. In doing so, the seats will be firm, and it will prevent the wire connections from losing.

Lastly, screw the upper lids in a perfect place. Now, your battery is ready to be used.

With these tips, everything is set, and more than ready to be utilized.

To Wrap It Up

If the battery management system determines that any preset limit has been passed like the battery draining just too low or a volume of current that is not safe is being pulled out from the battery, BMS will instantly cut out the power to the battery to protect it from getting damaged.
