High Drain Rechargeable Battery- Definition and Application

Jun 12, 2020   Pageview:6355

Portable electronic devices rely on either rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries to operate. The choice of battery used in a particular device highly depends on how much power it needs at a time and how long you want the battery to last before charging or replacing it. As far as output power is concerned, batteries are categorized as either low drain or high drain batteries.

So, before choosing the batteries for your portable electronic device, it is very important you first establish whether you need low drain or high drain batteries. In this article, I am going to share with you everything you need to know about high drain batteries.

What is a high drain rechargeable battery?

A high drain battery is one that has high output voltage and current to meet the power demands of the portable device in which it is being used. Such batteries are mainly used in devices that need a constant supply of power. On the other hand, low drain batteries are those that are designed to output low voltage and current at a time. These are used in devices that do not have high power needs. Rechargeable batteries that have a capacity less 600mAh fall under the category of low drain batteries

Using a low drain battery in a power-hungry device will greatly affect the performance of the device and the durability of the batteries themselves. In some cases, the device may draw lots of current from the battery that may lead to overheating of the battery. This in the end may damage the batteries in the long run and in the worst-case damage the device too. Before you decide on which batteries to buy for your device, always make sure you know the category of batteries it needs.

Most of the rechargeable high drain batteries are based on lithium battery technology. This is mainly because Lithium batteries have a high energy density and also allow more power to flow through them without overheating. Lithium batteries are also light which makes them ideal for portable devices where weight is a key factor in choosing the parts and accessories used to make the device. Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries are high drain batteries since most of them are designed for power-hungry devices. Low drain lithium batteries are normally not rechargeable and typically used in devices that demand less power

In what devices are high drain batteries used?

High drain batteries are used in power-hungry electronic devices that need a constant supply of power. Examples of devices that need high drain batteries include; Laptops, smartphones, AR gadgets, VR gadgets, etc. All these devices need batteries that can supply high voltage and current to meet their power demands. That's why you will always have to charge the battery of your smartphone at least once a day.

Smartphones use a lot of power to keep all the device operations active. Operating systems and apps of smartphones have background operations that stay active even when you are not using the phone. These operations all consume battery and require one that has the capacity to keep them active. On the other hand, devices like TV remotes only need power when they are actively being used. When the remote is not in use, it will consume no power at all

It is, for this reason, that battery cells in your remote last months before getting drained. Batteries used in devices like TV remotes are not designed to supply constant power because that would drain them in a couple of hours or minutes. They are designed to supply power only when the device is in use. Such devices that need less voltage and current do not require using high drain batteries as they may instead damage them. It also not economical to use a high drain battery is a device that doesn't need all that power.

Other things that you may need to know about high drain batteries

  • They charge faster.

High drain rechargeable batteries can be charged faster. These batteries are designed with less internal resistance that makes it possible to charge them with lots of power without causing the battery to heat up. At the moment we have batteries with over 4000mAh that can be charged in less than an hour. This is important especially for people who use their devices a lot and wound not want to put them down for a couple of hours to charger

  • They normally have a capacity above 1000mAh

The high capacity is necessary because the battery has to keep the device running for a couple of hours before the need to recharge. Using a battery with a capacity less than 1000mAh in a high drain device will require charging almost every after an hour or two which is not practical for mobile gadgets. The limit for high drain batteries is normally restricted by airplane requirements. That's why most of the high drain batteries used in high drain devices have a maximum capacity of less than 2700mAh.

  • High drain batteries have a high depth of discharge

Depth of discharge determines how much a battery can be drained without causing significant damage to the battery in the short and long term. Most of the high drain rechargeable batteries especially those based on Lithium technology have a depth of charge close to 100%. This means the battery can be discharged till 0% and it will still be able to recharge without a problem. However, draining the battery to 0% is not a recommended habit because it reduces the life of the battery in the long run.

Final Thoughts

High drain batteries like we have seen above are used in power-hungry (high drain) devices that need a constant power supply in huge volumes.  These batteries are the reason it is possible to do power demanding tasks like video editing and gaming on mobile devices like smartphones and laptops. It is always recommended that you first verify the power requirements of your device before choosing whether to buy high drain batteries or low drain ones.
