Lithium Polymer (LiPo) is a new type of high-power batteries used in most consumer electronic devices today. In the past few years, these batteries have been gaining a lot of popularity in the field of radio control.

The reason LiPos are very popular is that they offer a wide range of benefits. However, the user still has to decide where the good outweighs the bad. Like any other product, these batteries are not all good and without fault.

Another important thing is understanding the batteries before making a purchase. There are many things that most users never take note of. They include the numbers that feature on the covers of these batteries. For most users, they are just decorations that don’t make any sense.

Well, it is time to learn something new. We shall be looking at 2S LiPo batteries, what they are, and how to use them properly.

What is a 2s battery?

As stated above, all batteries come with certain numbers that manufacturers add on to define their products. For instance, take out the batteries in your smartphone and notice a number ending with mAh – like 5000mAh. This number represents the capacity of the battery.

Another important number is the one that ends with C – like, 50C. This figure represents the discharge rate, and it is very important for the effective application of the batteries.

You may be wondering where the 2S comes from in LiPos. It has something to do with the numbers. And in this case, not the capacity, not the discharge rate, but the voltage and cell count.

A LiPo cell comes with a nominal voltage of 3.7V. This means 3.7V is the safest voltage to operate the battery. Many other batteries come with a nominal voltage of 3.2V and below, which means LiPos are incredibly powerful.

However, instead of finding 3.7V on some batteries, you can find them written 7.4V as their nominal voltage. Do not be alarmed; it only means that there are two cells in series. The voltage gets added to give the final figure.

And this is why you will sometime hear people talking about “2S” battery packing. This pack has?2?batteries arranged in series.

This is a recent description of these batteries. In earlier days, they were represented as “2S2P”. It meant there were four cells in a battery, two arranged in series, and two arranged in parallel.

What are the characteristics of 2s Lipo batteries?

We have already talked about the most important property of 2S LiPo batteries – they have a bigger voltage. The nominal voltage of one lithium cell is 3.7V, where 2S batteries have 7.4V. This means the battery pack is strong and can power devices that require higher power consumption.

Another feature if a higher weight-energy ratio and volume-energy rate. Sometimes batteries carry a capacity related to their size and weight. LiPos are made for compatibility and portability. They feature a standard size, yet produce more energy compared to other bigger batteries. It is the same with its volume-energy rate, whereby the larger the battery. The bigger the battery, the more energy it gives out.

  • High voltage. The voltage of a single LiPo cell is equal to 3 nickel-cadmium battery or NI-MH batteries arranged in series. 2S lipo battery is, therefore, for times stronger than many other batteries. Lithium-based batteries are generally stronger, and lipo being the latest technology beats all of them.

  • Low rate of discharge. When you buy batteries, you want to use them for a long time before having to change them. You can do this by considering the discharge rate of the batteries. 2S lipo batteries come with a low self-discharge, which is the most obvious advantage.

  • No memory-effect. The memory effect, like in the lithium-cadmium batteries, records the level of charge and discharge for every cycle. This means you have to discharge or charge them for maximum out completely. 2S LiPos do not have this effect.

  • Long lifespan. Under normal circumstances, you get more than 500 lifecycles. This is more than what you get from many other batteries.

  • Quick charge. You can use a 2S battery at 0.5 to one-time of current applications in the charging process. This number can be reduced to 1- 2 hours.

  • It can be used in parallel. Not many batteries today can be used in parallel, but you with the 2S LiPos.

  • Green energy. Emissions have always been a major concern for the modern world. 2S batteries do not threaten the environment, because they don’t come with heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and mercury.

  • High-cost. Because of their power and functionality, 2S lipo batteries are quite expensive.

How do you protect the 2s LIPO battery?

Even though 2S batteries are very powerful, they may not give you the service you require unless you know how to use them. And this comes down to protecting the batteries. Here are a few tips you can use.

  • Charging. Always make sure to use a LiPo compatible charger. They require specialized care since they use a CC/CV charging system. CC is constant current, where CV is constant voltage. Therefore, pick the right charger that is designed to keep these charging rules. Avoid things like parallel charging because it can be quite dangerous for the cells.

  • Discharging. LiPo batteries are famous for their high power and run time. But there is a price to pay for this feature. The cells can easily catch fire when wrongly used; it is critical to use them in the right matter, especially in terms of balancing.

  • Storage and usage. It is recommendable that you put the batteries in a storage mode after every use. Consider storing them in a cool and dry place and avoid using under hot conditions.

  • Disposal. You need to ensure the warranty has expired before disposing of 2S LiPo batteries. And then you can discharge the batteries as far as it safely can before putting them away.
