Car battery weight is an important factor to consider if you are looking for a high quality performing car. The greater the weight of an automobile battery, the greater will be its total weight that will reduce its swift nature and durability. There are numerous battery weights available and the knowledge of these can make it easier for you to make your choice.
How much does an average battery weigh?
The performance of the car largely depends on the type of the batteries. Essentially, there are three types of batteries: Lighweight, Standard and Empty
Lightweight batteries are suitable for small vehicles and function a lot better. Selecting a battery weight will provide the energy necessary for the car. Light weight batteries have a range of 10-20 pounds but you might end up buying something very small.
Standard batteries have a weight of 40-60 pounds and you can purchase any standard battery depending on the model of your automobile. It is also advised to check the spcifications of the product before you purchase them. Some of the popular brands of the batteries are Die Hard, True Start, Equalizer, Duralast, Ever Start.
Empty car batteries weigh 15 pounds and then again it depends on how heavy you want to transfer. Some batteries may also be available weighing 6-7 pounds. When purchasing a new battery, the overall measurement and dimensions must be taken into consideration. Load carrying trucks have bigger battery capacities as compared to passenger vehicles. Different battery sizes are European size, Asian size and American size.
The weight of a car battery is usually printed on a sticker and you may also weigh it yourself with scales. However, the weight of a battery is the dry charged battery and usually car batteries are chosen depending on the model.
Why is a car battery so heavy?
Car batteries (conventional lead-acid batteries) have shrunk over time. Conventional lead batteries had thick glass cases and used solid lead plates suspended in acid; these were extremely heavy and designed in a reliable way. These batteries are called "marine" or "deep cycle" batteries.
The car batteries are so heavy and big because the starter motor, when starting a cold automobile engine, will require a few hundred amps of current from the battery. The battery is composed of plates suspended in the water/acid solution with enough surface area so that a chemical reaction can occur to supply that current. Further, proper internal wiring and connectors of sufficient size are also required that allow the current to pass to the battery terminals. This is essential for the power burst to start the engine and the wiring adds to the weight of the batteries.
These batteries have been optimized for their design to produce steady lower rates of current andso that they do not result in a lot of damage in anyway. Nowadays these batteries have been designed in a lighter way with the help fo plastic cases but the basic design of the deep-cycle batteries is the same as they were in the early 20th century.
If the lead plates in the battery had a larger surface area, all other things being same, a battery could produce more current in a shorter period of time. Therefore, batteries have been designed with battery plates that were "foamed" instead of solid lead, so the weight is a little reduced.
These batteries were introduced into cars and they were perfect for providing a huge jolt of amperage all at once but the demand for such batteries is not good. These batteres weigh less--but but sometimes their discharge may cause the plates to be damaged.
The lead batteries require that much size to generate a good amount of current needed to turn the engine over to start. However, the advances in electronics have led to the designing of parts that do not require as much current to run, so even if the batteries are made smaller, it will generate sufficient current.
Also, Car batteries use lead plate technology which is cheap and easily accessible as compaed to he modern lithium ion batteries that are yet to be introduced into cars. Therefore, since even in the 21st century the lead batteries are most often used in the cars, the battery weighs more and occupies the maximum weight of a car.
Does heavy car battery have better quality?
The quality of batteries depends on its design and whether it can handle difficult work and heavy tasks. The term heavy-duty means it is made to handle heavy tasks and is designed from stronger equipment. However, not all lead batteries are heavy duty. So the quality depends o how the manufacturer constructs the battery and the capacity of the battery.
Different types of industrial batteries are available and while heavy duty batteries are robust, not wach one is designed for the same purpose. A quality battery will have strong starting power and long running time for maximizing operational efficiency. High quality batteries are also adaptable and must be able to endure changing climate conditions. The batteries should also be able to withstand vibrations and road conditions. These heavy duty batteries are also very costly and must have long product life.
A good quality battery offers consistent power, durability and lasts for a long time. Battery construction is very important in determining its quality. A tubular construction of battery offers greater surface area for the flow of electrolytes, more power and capacity. However, flat plate constructions offers durability and consistent power as well as efficiency.
The quality also depends on the material of the battery and the finishing. Lesser grade lead batteries may provide low quality batteries. Crown Battery with their Max Haul product line offers very good quality batteries and and you can look in details about them for the best quality batteries.
Even today, lead batteries are preffered as car batteries for they provide for the heavy duty work and are durable. Depending on the material and the construction, they offer quality and greater capacity as well as a long life span.
