What types of  lithium batteries can be sent?

Any domestic or international mail service you use, most of the countries can carry only the following types of lithium batteries:

  • lithium ion (rechargeable) - 20 watt hours per cell or 100 watt hours per battery.

  • Non-rechargeable lithium metal - one gram per cell or two grams per battery.

However, it is said that only if the battery or cell (maximum of two batteries or four individual cells) is mounted in the unit and meets all the packaging specifications will lithium batteries be sent globally (air or sea) or domestically by air.

It is also forbidden to be sent recalled, damaged or non-conforming lithium ion cells or batteries as it is so hazardous and does not meet the regulations of shipping lithium ion batteries.

How to package lithium batteries?

Make sure you can't accidentally turn on the electronic device you're sending, and you've used powerful internal and external packaging. Lithium batteries should not be packed on their own or alongside a device under any circumstances.

Use of the International Courier product to send lithium batteries overseas Shipments of electronic items containing lithium cells and batteries are prohibited.

How do you post lithium batteries?

When it comes to shipped batteries, all batteries are considered hazardous; knowing what you can send and what you can't do is more important. This simple guide will point you in the right direction so that with a piece of mind you can send your items.

Lithium ion batteries are highly flammable and can potentially lead to an explosion if they are exposed to high temperatures, they are prone to overheating. Lithium ion batteries are therefore considered dangerous items. Most couriers on their small lists have these batteries.

  • No more than 2 lithium-ion batteries must be mounted in any package.

  • These will stay inside the electrical equipment (such as a laptop) for which they are used to deliver Lithium ion batteries.

  • It is necessary to turn off the device in which the batteries are shipped. You also need to make sure there is no way the system can be turned on during transit by mistake. This can be done by taking extra time to protect your element switches.

If you are shipping lithium-ion batteries, you must have to follow the above  rules. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) tracks the sending of batteries to read their rules for a more comprehensive guide.

What is the difference of posting lithium batteries in different countries?

Every country has their own rule and regulations. In the same way for the posting of lithium ion battery is alike. Most of the countries follow IATA that is international air transport association guide to post lithium ion batteries. However, some countries do not allow to post lithium batteries to their countries such as Germany, Italy, Laos or Macao. Even, if you do ship batteries there, they will reject it and return your item to the sender. Whereas, Australia does not return the lithium batteries but there rules are also very strict and they do not allow batteries to be post which contain more than 100 watts per hour battery that is for rechargeable lithium ion batteries and for non-rechargeable lithium batteries, lithium should not be more than 2gms per battery.

Lithium batteries must stay in their associated battery while traveling abroad. Lithium batteries can't be delivered separately. That is why it is very important to test the specific rules in the country you are shipping to when shipping lithium batteries abroad. Also, it is necessary to search about the rule and regulations of posting lithium batteries in which country you want to post it so that you have an idea about it.

Before sending Lithium batteries overseas, check the International Post Guide for any local restrictions in place which will be quite helpful for you in order to post lithium ion batteries in other countries.
