18650 voltage batteries are from the lithium-ion family of batteries. Their classifying property is their size that is 18mm x 65mm, hence they are a little bigger than your usual AA battery. The size of the battery can have some variations here and there but they are usually of the said size. The 18650 battery has a whole range of applications ranging from laptops to mobile phones to flashlights to high draining devices. These batteries have a very long charging life hence they are ideal for devices that are very battery draining. Another application of 18650 voltage batteries is the vaping device. They have a huge voltage capacity and comes in bot flat and button variations.
18650 voltage batteries can live up to 300 to 500 charging cycles. And their life can further be prolonged by charging them before they get completely discharged. You can get the most of these batteries in about two years and even more if you are careful.
It also has a very low discharge rate. Hence, it can hold up pretty good in storage as well. This is one of the main reasons why it is used in a flashlight. It will prove itself to be very beneficial in times of crisis.
These batteries come in two variations as mentioned above. Namely the flat top and button style. Button top batteries will put out slightly and the flat tops fit perfectly flush. Which one should is suitable for which device is checked with the help of the length of the battery pack container
What is the voltage of a completely charged 18650 battery?
The 18650 battery voltage has very high voltage capacity and long life. It can perform exceptionally well at high temperatures. Due to all these features, this battery needs a super-powerful balance charger.
The battery capacity of the Lithium-ion capacity is usually between 1200mAh to 3400mAh whereas the normal batteries can only support 800mAh capacity. And it very important to note that when we pack the battery pack, it can support up to 5000mAh capacity. This proves that this battery is very powerful and can exceed the life of a normal battery. It can produce a voltage of 3.7 volts to 4.2 volts.
This battery has an exceptionally long life and can live up to almost 500 charging cycles. It is almost double the charging life of a normal battery. It has amazing discharging efficiency. It has a discharge efficiency of almost 65%.
However, there a few things that you should always keep in mind while charging or discharging the 18650 voltage battery.
" Always remember to charge your battery when it reaches 3 volts. Never let it go down to 2 volts to ensure a healthy battery.
" Always use the specified charger for a 18650 voltage battery.
" Never charge your battery in below freezing temperature. Also, temperature control is very important. Keep checking your battery if it is hot or cold. If your battery is getting too fast too quick, then there are 100 percent charges that your battery is getting over-stressed.
" Never overcharge your battery. It is better to undercharge your battery than to over-charge it. Consider charging your battery to 4 volts rather than 4.2 volts so that your battery remains healthy.
" Know what is partial charge and discharge. Consider only discharging your battery to let's say 3.2 volts rather than 3 volts. This reduces the stress on your battery and keeps it in a top-notch condition.
Can you charge 18650 battery in a normal charger?
Charging 18650 battery can be a risky business at times. You need to ensure that you are charging the battery at proper voltage and are not taking any risks. Also, charge one cell at a time out of your pack because parallel charging can and will cause damage to your battery. Resulting in unhealthy battery life and lower charge cycles.
Before buying the battery, read up on the manufacturer from where you are getting the battery. He could provide you useful insights on the charging and other information. You need a maximum of 4.2 volts while charging the battery. Or you could use 4 volts just to remain on the safe side. Keep inside this bracket until the company says otherwise. Thumb rule is to set the current to a half of the capacity of the cell. Let's says your battery provides a current of 3400mAP. Keep the charging current to (3400/2) = 1400mAh. Both these limits are very crucial and can be very damaging to the battery if not followed very closely.
Now the charger, these batteries can be charged with any Lithium-ion battery charger that has a capacity of 4.2 volts. You can charge a single battery with a current of 4.2 volts but you should stick to special balance chargers while charging your battery packs. Many companies have come up with special chargers for the 18650 voltage batteries. These batteries include Ultra-fire, Nitecore, XTAR and many more.
It is better to stick to a balance charge so that you don't compromise on the health factor of your battery.
How do you protect the voltage of 18650 battery?
Firstly, if you are short on cash then you just buy a normal battery rather than the 18650 voltage battery as the protected batteries will be very heavy on the pocket. But if you still want to go for the 18650 voltage battery in a budget, get an unprotected battery and follow these simple steps to protect them yourself.
" Get a multimeter, soldering iron, wire cutter, an old phone battery and some extra wires in one place.
" Very carefully open up the circuit and figure out the positive and negative terminals. Practice extreme caution in this step as it might cause a short circuit. After you are done, solder the circuit to the battery.
" Prepare four equal length copper wires.
" Solder together the battery and the circuit with the help of wires and soldering iron.
" Now, check the voltage with the help of a multi-mete. If it shows the correct voltage, then your battery is protected.
