How to Jumpstart a Dead Lithium-Ion Battery: Methods and Cycle Life

May 25, 2020   Pageview:1001

Everybody knows that batteries are pivotal for our activities now. There’s barely any device that doesn’t work with either electricity or batteries. Remote controls, clocks, flashlights and watches - these are some of the few objects that require batteries. Now imagine a scenario where the cells are dead, and we have no spare batteries. We have to struggle to get out of the house and go to the nearest store for batteries, assuming that they do have batteries. If you’ve been in such a situation, don’t worry, because we have a solution for dead batteries - especially lithium-ion batteries. Here, we will talk about dead cells and how to jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery.

Can you jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery?

Before we start the steps on how to jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery, we need to understand what we are trying to revive. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries developed by Akira Yoshida. What makes it unusual is the fact that it can last for a while until it starts to deteriorate (around two to three years). Moreover, its components prevent it from getting fatal memory effects, unlike nickel-based batteries.

Another advantage of lithium-ion batteries is the design. The designer realizes that lithium-ion batteries have voltage limits. Tospecial the borders, the designer created protections for the cells. The protections are:

●Shut-down operator - to prevent overheating

●Tear-away tab - to release internal pressure from the inside

●Thermal interrupt - to avoid excessive causes such as current and charging

●Vent - in case there is outgassing

From here, we can assume that lithium-ion is the perfect battery type for everybody. It is safe, long-lasting, and rechargeable. Of course, it is rechargeable means that you can jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery!

How do you jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery?

The process of how to jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery is not as hard as it sounds. However, you should proceed with caution. After all, the process involves electricity and current. Make sure the process is done in an open room/field where there are no objects on the room/field. Stay away from gasoline vapors as far as possible to prevent unnecessary accidents. After all, they are flammable objects.

Without further ado, let’s start the process of doing jumpstart on a dead lithium-ion battery. Here are the things you need:

●Inactive lithium-ion batteries

●Multimeter

●Crocodile clips

●Metal nails or clips

●Laptop

●USB cord you are willing to cut

●Safety glasses for you to wear

Now that you have your tools, it’s time to jumpstart your dead lithium-ion battery. Here is the first way you can do for the jumpstart:

1.Cut the smaller end of the SUB cord or the B connector.

2.Find the negative and positive wires, which are black and read in colors.

3.Put the wires to the battery. Make sure the cables correspond with the ends of the batteries.

4.Plug the USB to your laptop.

5.Wait for the battery to finish charging. It usually takes around three hours to charge one lithium-ion battery.

6.(Optional) After the cells are done charging, use it on an electric device to test the result.

Here’s another way to activate the li-ion battery, this one focusing on the sleep mode of the battery:

1.Read the voltage of the dead battery. If the voltage is below the stated voltmeter of the battery, then the battery is in sleep mode.

2.Take a good battery that has the same voltage as the dead battery. Put the two in a parallel circuit. You can do so by using the crocodile clips and connect the two cells with wires or jumper leads. The first part that should be connected is the neutrals, and then the positives.

3.Wait for five to fifteen minutes, and you’re done. Make sure the battery won’t get too hot.

The steps are not that complicated, aren’t they? But don’t forget, proceed with caution!

How do you extend the cycle life of a lithium-ion battery?

Of course, if you try your best to extend the cycle life of the battery, you don’t have to do the steps explained just now. Here are some things you can do to make your lithium-ion battery lasts longer:

●Room temperature

Heat is one of the significant factors that can lessen the life of a lithium-ion battery. To prevent the tragedy, it’s best to store the cells in a room whose temperature is twenty to twenty-five-degree celsius.

●Manufacturing dates

Remember, not all batteries are produced at the same time. Due to the difference in time, it means that each battery has its lifetime. To prevent from getting the one that almost expires, ask the clerk for the manufacturing dates of the cells.

●Monthly Partial Discharge

Although lithium-ion has a little case of memory effect, it’s still a good idea to do the partial discharge every thirty charges. If you keep doing full discharge continuously, it will lessen the accuracy of the power gauge. To keep the measure accurate, it’s best to do a partial discharge every thirty charges.

●Store spares in a cool place

Some battery spares don’t make sense, because they are not as good as the original battery. If you store your spares at a cull charge, the same case will probably happen to you. To maintain the quality of the spares, it’s best to discharge it at forty percent and store it in the refrigerator.

If you do the steps above, then a long-lasting lithium-ion battery can be more than just a dream.

Closing

Maintain the quality of lithium-ion batteries is not easy, but they’re not hard either. As long as you do the maintenance diligently and adequately, your battery will last a long time. If your cells are dead, don’t worry. There are steps on how to jumpstart a dead lithium-ion battery to help recover your beloved battery. Once your battery is alive again, you can start taking care of it with love and affection. There is no such thing as an impossibility, and the same goes for high-quality lithium-ion battery.
