Are Lithium Batteries Safe-Safety Analysis

APR 22, 2020   Pageview:1526

Lithium battery was invented with Goodenough cathode in 1985 by Akira Yoshino & starts commercially viable.

Well, what basically is a lithium battery & for purpose is it used? Everything in this world that is invented was a result of a need, without need nothing is invented, & why is that? Because need provides the reason for something to be researched upon and hens with a lot of efforts of really intelligent people a solution for that need is invented.

So, as for lithium-ion battery, it is basically used as an energy storage device for being used at a later time. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for portable electronic devices & are popular for military &special applications. Not only for them but if have we taken a glance at our own daily routines we are very much dependent of such devices that are run through devices that are operated with these energy storing batteries. For example: most commonly used are our mobile phones that run on lithium-ion battery and our laptops are also running on batteries that are charged and their energy is used a later stage. Other than that we have several examples like most of our kitchen appliances and our cosmetic appliances require a battery. And it’s a fact that these devices have made our lives very much easy because we don’t need an electric socket every time, we can charge and use our device whenever want.

In current era everyone in the world is trying to move towards best energy saving & utilizing, to be cost efficient, in which many sources are available as primary providers like coal, natural gas, sunlight, wind & hydropower etc. The biggest challenge is to store the received energy where we have an option of lithium batteries which supports us to store the electro charges to utilize them in different areas.

Where we have the biggest support of lithium batteries to store energy there is also a challenge “Are lithium batteries safe for our environment?”  Let’s have some safe & safety analysis regarding lithium batteries below

Are lithium batteries radioactive?

Well, No they are not. As many experts said that they are not radioactive however, some said that they contain only little amount of radioactive isotopes of component elements which are pretty much present in everything.

Lithium-ion batteries like AA, AAA & others, uses chemistry to generate electricity. Chemical reactions produce the electrode of the battery, which is converted to electricity to the devices.  This simple reaction doesn’t produce any type or radiation, including EMF radiation. It means that if we take an EMF meter, like the Trifold TF2 e.g.  Any magnetic, electric or RF radiation will not be read from the batteries themselves.  So there is a lot to this, because power provided by batteries to the devices that produces small or large amount of EMF radiation. So, batteries do not produce radiation directly.

Are lithium batteries safe in cars?

For running a car on a battery it required something with less weight and more life. There are a number of choices like a Nickel-Metal battery, Lead Acid battery or ultra-capacitors. But all these choices have certain limitations and keeping previous mentioned things in mind a lithium-ion battery is the best choice. Lithium-ion batteries have very huge power-to-weight ratio having good efficiency & performance with respect to high energy & temperature. They are vital for electric cars being used nowadays. Less weight cars can provide good millage meaning the car can travel more on a single charge.

The safety of lithium-ion batteries in cars is the biggest priority of automobile manufacturers. The manufacturers are focusing on reducing of the risk and the improvement about the safety & systems.  These batteries are considered as a best choice for mobiles & laptops because they are smaller gadgets , considering to use them in a car there is a higher potential risk because keeping so much energy in such a small place is very much difficult.

The key challenges are preventing overcharging, overheating and damage in case of an accident.  These common accidents are observed in cell phones and laptops with lithium-ion batteries.  Their damage is nothing considered to what it will do in a car with a much more powerful battery. Till now only TESLA has developed a system called LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM, which ensures to prevent overcharging, overheating and for preventing any damage due to an accident it is enclosed within a protective case.

Here a slight error in the quality can cause lives. So, yes there is a system that can make it safe but ensuring the upright quality of that system is a question, which can be the answer of weather lithium ion batteries are safe for cars or not.

Why do you like lithium-ion batteries?

There are several reasons to like a lithium-ion battery. For a start they are very much eco-friendly i.e. having very low level of toxic metals as compared to other batteries. They are having A Bigger Energy Punch as they are highly energy dense. And why is that? Because lithium is highly reactive, with the ability to release and store high amount of energy. Another reason is that they require very less maintenance as compared to nickel cadmium or nickel metal. They don’t suffer from the memory effect. They also have more charge cycles and low self-discharge rate.

Comparing these batteries with the other available choices they are considered to be most efficient and also safest as there exist. But work studies are being done for making them safer or to find another way that is more efficient and safer. Well, humans strive for finding a better solution for the best available one shall continue because it’s our nature. In this era of technology we are always doing different studies and experiments to meet our needs. This lithium-ion battery was also a result of our need and now we need something better than this to make our live more easy, sooner or later we are going to find a way for this.
