Today’s world is all about electronics and the appliances based on it, which makes it necessary to know about how they are powered; the batteries. There are several different types of batteries available in the market these days each having its specific output power. The 18650 batteries or mainly referred to as the ‘18650 cells’ are Lithium-Ion Batteries which are now being used extensively. The 18650 cells produce an output voltage of 3.7 Volts and a current output of 1800-3500 mAh (milliampere-hours). The quality of output energy of Lithium-ion batteries is twice what is produced by its predecessor; the standard nickel-cadmium battery. It takes 4 hours on an average for the 18650 Lithium-ion battery to charge depending on the voltage/ampere rating of the charger and the type of the battery.
What Devices Use 18650 Battery
The 1860 Lithium-ion battery is very low maintenance and economical battery unlike other batteries in the market. The 18650 cell does not have any battery memory and there are no schedules to be followed for the battery cycle; no special charging or discharging techniques are required for healthier battery life. When compared to the nickel-cadmium battery, the 18650 battery does not self-discharge much. It provides a 70% more backup. The 18650 Lithium-ion cells can be put into disposal without any health hazards. These are the reasons why these batteries are being used in many devices, such as:
Laptops
Laptop batteries are according to the output of the laptop and are made up of special materials, but they have 18650 cells inside them. Since these are Lithium-ion batteries, they can very easily handle high-output requirements, longer battery life, and extensive work. Most commonly, a 3.7-volt protected-type battery with a 3500mAh output is used in laptops.
Chainsaws
The use of Lithium-ion batteries in chainsaws has made these ferocious devices easier for everyone. Due to the 18650 cell, chainsaws are now lighter in weight with almost no oil leakage and spark plug replacements.
18650 Flashlights
The 18650 cells are now being used to produce high-output, quality flashlights which are easier to recharge. With these batteries, the lights can produce outputs up to 1000 lumens. These lights are good for domestic uses as they are portable and water-resistant and also for firemen, law enforcement agencies, and the military.
Power Banks
The 18650 battery now provides you the opportunity to charge your devices whenever and wherever through power banks. Power banks use the 18650 Lithium-ion batteries with stable and longer outputs and smaller sizes.
Electric Bikes
It is amazing to see how much a battery can affect our lives. Electric bikes have made traveling a lot easier, quieter, and faster. Easily rechargeable and offering longer outputs, E-bikes are a wonder of the 18650 batteries.
What Type of Batteries are Used in Laptops
Since the last decade, laptops have gone through revolutionary changes in their design, hardware, and battery to produce the best devices. In terms of battery technology, laptops have seen drastic changes over the years. Below given are types of batteries that have been and are being used in the laptops:
Nickel-Cadmium Batteries:
In the early stages, Nickel-Cadmium batteries where used which had elongated battery life with faster charging. They could, under optimum charging conditions, provide about 1500 lifecycles of battery. The Ni-Cd batteries produced stable outputs and were smaller in size and economical damage. Ni-Cd batteries produce optimum results when drained completely. However, high energy density was one of the major drawbacks they had along with the ‘memory effect’. These Ni-Cd batteries require periodic maintenance, otherwise, they can lose a significant amount of battery cycles.
Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries:
The Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries (NiMH) replaced the Nickel-Cadmium batteries. They, unlike their predecessor, could produce higher energy density outputs and were free from any memory issues. The NiMH batteries were prone to temperature changes and bad environmental effects. The NiMH batteries work better when used with a combination of charging and discharging. The major problem was that these batteries only had 300 battery cycles, and they were attributed to longer charging times and heat-ups during charging. The shelf life of these batteries was also found to be less as compared to other batteries.
Lithium-Ion Batteries:
Lithium-Ion batteries are the most refined form of all other battery types. The 18650 Lithium-ion battery is designed especially to be used in laptops. These batteries have the highest energy densities, as compared to other battery types, almost twice of them. Lithium-ion batteries have a unique effective utilization feature, which saves a great number of charges that is why these batteries have very low self-discharging rates. These batteries do not require extra maintenance and are eco-friendly, as well as, pocket friendly. The only problems with these batteries are that their life declines with time and the batteries' full charging capacity slowly decreases these and secondly that these batteries are flammable and require careful disposal.
How to Know If Your 18650 Battery is Good
There are several ways available to check the condition of your battery that whether your battery is good or bad. With these 6 tips, you can come upon a pretty solid idea about your batteries condition:
Monitor the battery-saving; you should keep a check on how much battery level is being lost when the device is at standby as a good battery won’t lose much.
Look out for higher temperatures during charging. A good battery does not heat-up to an abnormal level during charging.
Plenty of useful life at hand; the average useful life of Lithium-ion batteries is 2-3 years, you should know how much of it have you utilized.
Deteriorating battery health; a battery is good until it can utilize 80% of its full capacity.
Longer recharges; a good battery will not take an abnormal amount of time to reach the state of being fully charged.
Watch out for deformations; a good battery will always be in perfect physical shape, however, damaged batteries will possess deformations, most commonly swellings.
