What are lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries are the preferred source of energy to power many appliances. These appliances include mobile phone, children toys, and electric bikes. These batteries are widely used by human beings. Almost all the goods of daily use require lithium batteries. Lithium batteries have an anode made up of metallic lithium. These batteries have a high charge density. Lithium is used in batteries because it provides more voltage as compared to any other metal such as zinc or carbon. The voltage produced has a range of 1.5 V to 3.7 V. The cathode is made up of manganese dioxide. The electrolyte is a salt of lithium metal.

Transportation mode of lithium batteries

The people are not very well aware of the danger of its transportation. Due to the movements of lithium ions from the anode to cathode, it requires many precautions during its shipping. Many countries are manufacturing lithium batteries and export these batteries to other countries to earn revenue. Lithium batteries can be transported internationally only if the batteries are present in the appliances. They cannot be shipped without the device. During shipping make sure that the device is cushioned properly. It should not get switch on accidentally. There are many ways to ship lithium batteries from their place of manufacturing.?

Can lithium batteries be shipped by air?

There are approximately 18 billion lithium batteries that are shipped every year. Some of the airlines think that lithium batteries catch fire that cannot be extinguished. A new rule passed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is that no standalone lithium batteries can be shipped by the passenger airlines. But you can still ship the devices that need batteries for power. Only those batteries that are packed with the appliances can be shipped. The lithium batteries can be shipped via cargo-only aircraft.?

Rules for shipping lithium batteries through air

  • The lithium batteries n be shipped at a state of charge 30%. The batteries must not be fully charged because at full charge the movement of ions in the electrolyte increases that can cause danger.

  • The 30% of the charging means 3.0 V. the lithium cell at fully charged condition provides 4.2 V. So, by 30% it means that the 30% of 4.2 V. This should be kept in mind that no shipper ships the lithium battery at 30%. It is usually shipped at 70% of the charging.

  • The lithium batteries must be packed separately. They should be isolated from all other items.

  • The lithium batteries included inside the devices must be cushioned properly so that the device must not get on accidentally.

  • The shipper is not allowed to send more than one package of the standalone lithium batteries. The packing must be done according to the provided instruction by ICAO. For packing instructions he must follow the instruction 965 or 968 of Section II.

  • You should know that it is not lithium or oxygen that burns. When the cell is extra charges or discharges the oxygen in the matrix tries to convert into oxygen gas. That gas burns when heat increases. The storage place must have oxygen suppressant extinguishers.

Labeling the consignment

The consignment containing the lithium-ion batteries must contain the label provided by ICAO. This will be easy to understand by the workers that they have to carry it properly. They will know that they have to place that packet separate from all other items. The labels on the packing matter a lot.?

Can you send lithium batteries in the mail?

The shipping of the lithium batteries require a lot of care. Whichever medium of transportation is used it should be done properly. If you wish to ship lithium-ion batteries or electronic devices then you should know about certain requirements. Try to pack the batteries properly. You must know of the time your consignment needs for shipment. The packing must be done properly according to the destination of the consignment. You can send lithium batteries by mail if the below-given requirements are met by you:

  • Keep the batteries in the original manufacturer's sealed packing. There is no need to replace the packing. This will save the batteries from short circuits. The packing must be perfect to avoid the movement within the outer packaging. This will also keep the device away from accidental switch on.

  • If the complete battery is not sealed then cover the terminal of the battery. You can use any type of tape to do so. Instead of putting a seal on the battery you can place the batteries in separate bags.

  • Try not to pack the batteries with metal objects. The rubbing of the metal on the terminals of the battery will charge it electrostatically. In this way, the battery will gain heat and there are chances of damage. So, keep batteries away from metallic tools.

  • The packing used for batteries must rigid and strong. Select an inert material for packing the batteries. The lithium-ion batteries will be charged if used in any metallic container.

  • Make sure that you have done complete paperwork before booking a consignment. The paperwork has great value. You should mention the number of batteries present in the package. The shipper should know that the consignment contains lithium-ion batteries.

Can you transport items with lithium batteries?

You cannot transport any kind of item with lithium batteries. The ICAO has made a list of rules the shippers must follow to transport the lithium-ion batteries. The lithium batteries require a cool and dry place. The batteries must be protected from heat. If the batteries will be shipped will other items then there are many chances of giving heat to the batteries. The heat will cause the batteries to burn. The burning of batteries will also destroy other items.?The heat will cause oxygen to convert into oxygen gas which will start burning.
