The experimentation with Lithium element began in the year 1912 under the regulation of G.N Lewis. However, the commercialization of Lithium batteries didn't come to the market until the late 1970s. In 1980, an American Physicist, Professor John Goodenough, made a breakthrough by inventing a new type of Lithium battery that could migrate the ions from one electrode to another. 

As Lithium is one of the lightest elements in the periodic table, it has several properties that come in handy for making batteries. It has large electrochemical potential, which results in producing the highest voltage in the lightest volumes. This laid the foundation for Lithium-ion batteries, and the battery technology was changed forever. Later on, the scientists who worked as a team, John Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, & Akira Yoshino, won the Nobel Prize for their work in the development of this battery. 

Once the battery was discovered, the Scientists believed that Lithium Batteries would provide a cost-effective and safe energy source to all humanity. How Did Lithium Battery Develop In History?

Just like any other invention, Lithium battery development also went through many phases. Alongside, many other inventions were done that led to the success of Lithium batteries. The development phases can be narrowed down to the following:

?During the 1970s, there was an intentional oil crisis that made the scientists go into hyperactive mode. An English chemist, Stanley Whittingham, appointed at Exxon mobile, started exploring the idea of a new battery that could recharge on its own in a shorter span. This gave hope of fossil-free energy to all the people. 

?In the first attempt, the Chemist used Titanium Disulfide and Lithium metal for electrodes, but there were numerous safety concerns and other challenges. The experiment was a colossal disaster, and Exxon halted the experiments entirely. 

?Fortunately, John Goodenough, employed as an Engineering Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, got another idea. He experimented using Lithium Cobalt Oxide as Cathode instead of Titanium Disulfide, and he succeeded. Further, the battery's energy potential was doubled. 

?Half a decade later, Akira Yoshino at Meijo University, Japan, changed the idea once again. He used carbonaceous material, petroleum coke for the anode, and a revolution emerged. The battery was much safer than its counterpart, and performance improved without compromise. Thus, the first prototype of Lithium-ion batteries was recorded in history. 

And all these experiments led to the Lithium-ion battery that we know today. It was Sony who made the first move to commercialize the Lithium-ion battery in 1991. Gradually, the chemistry got new elements added, such as lithium polymer battery, Alkaline Batteries, Lithium Cobalt Oxide battery, etc. In the present world, these batteries are used in various devices, including (but not limited to) smartphones, electric vehicles, digital cameras, power tools, telecommunications applications, etc.
