Lithium Cell Battery-Comparison, Characteristics, and Best Choice

Aug 01, 2020   Pageview:1021

Lithium cell batteries are a type of lithium batteries that have lithium metal as their anode. Compared to other disposable batteries, these batteries have a higher charge density and a longer life. That's why they are more suitable for electronic devices that are power demanding since they will last longer despite outputting a large amount of energy at a time. Lithium cell batteries usually have a voltage that ranges between 1.5V to 3.7V. The voltage depends on the design and the target devices for that particular cell.

These Lithium cell batteries should not be confused with Lithium-ion or Lithium-Polymer batteries mainly because they differ in chemistry and overall design. The difference in their design and internal chemistry is the reason why Li-ion and Lithium-Polymer batteries are rechargeable whereas lithium cell batteries are not.

If you want to know more about lithium cell batteries, continue reading this article because I am going to share with you everything you need to know about them and how they compare with other battery technologies

What is the difference between lithium cell battery and lithium battery pack

Lithium cell batteries are batteries that are composed of one cell that works independently. These batteries are used in portable electronic devices like flashlights, radios, wall clocks, cameras, etc. in situations where the device needs more power, more than one cell battery can be added to meet the power demands of that devices. Most of the devices use between 1 and 4 of these cell batteries.

On the other hand, a lithium battery pack is a collection of several lithium cell batteries put together to generate more power. Battery packs can have cell batteries ranging from 2 to 20 cell batteries or even more. The number of cell batteries put together depends on the target device where the cells are to be used and how much power it needs.

For instance, if a device needs about 14V and 20A, there is no single lithium cell battery that can provide such power. In such a situation, several cell batteries have to be connected in parallel and series to meet the power needs of the device

What are the characteristics of lithium cell batteries

Lithium cell batteries normally have a voltage between 1.5V to 3.7V. The voltage depends on the design of the battery and the chemical compounds used to make the battery. Most of the other types of disposable batteries always have less than 3.7v. This is why Lithium cell batteries are always preferred in devices that need a lot of power.

They have a high charge density. By design, Lithium cell batteries are made to store more energy per unit volume compared to other battery technologies. The advantage of this is that they can be made a little smaller and yet store lots of energy. This is what makes them the ideal choice for portable devices that need small-sized batteries

Lithium cell batteries also have a longer shelf life. They have a standard shelf life of 3 to 5 years.  However, some people have stored them for up to 10 years and they still worked fine thereafter. This feature is important especially for businesses that might not sell off their stock in time.

They use Lithium metal as their anode. This means the lithium ions will move from the anode to the cathode when the battery is being used. The cathode material used varies but most of the lithium cell batteries in the market use heat-treated manganese dioxide. The commonly used electrolyte in Lithium cell batteries is an organic solvent called Lithium perchlorate.

They are normally cylindrical. Most of the lithium cell batteries are cylindrical. Their thickness and diameter depend on the design of the battery and the device it is being designed for. Cell batteries that are designed for watches normally have a very small thickness of about 1.6mm. On the other hand, cell batteries designed for devices like cameras and remotes normally have a height of about 15 to 20mm.

How do you choose the best lithium cell battery

There is no single formula that can be used to choose the best lithium cell batteries for every device. The cell batteries one should choose largely depends on the factors at hand. Some of these factors include;

1.Power Needs of the Device

While choosing a lithium cell battery for your device, you need to first determine how much power the device needs. This is because Lithium-cell batteries have different voltages and choosing a battery with a voltage more or less than what your devices needs could do more harm than good. Always make sure you check the input power of your device needs before choosing the lithium cell batteries you need

2.How the Target Device is Used

Cell batteries suitable for a device like a remote may not necessarily be suitable for a digital camera. A remote uses very little pulses of power whereas a digital camera needs more power continuously especially while recording videos. This means the battery capacity of batteries you need in a digital camera should be higher than that for remotes. Otherwise, you will find yourself being interrupted in the middle of the job

3.Manufacturer of the Batteries

The manufacturer you choose is crucial because there are several counterfeit Lithium cell batteries in the market. Most of these brands that make fake batteries advertise features that are different from the actual features of the battery. Some of the best battery brands that you can trust include; Duracell, Energizerbattery, Panasonic, and Rayovac. There are several other battery brands, but these are among the few companies whose batteries you can trust to get the job done.

Final Thoughts

Lithium cell batteries are among the most popular disposal batteries in the market thanks to their great performance and durability. These batteries can be used in a wide range of devices and your choice of features for the batteries you need should largely depend on what your device needs. In cases where the device needs a lot of power, several Lithium cell batteries can be put together in a battery pack to provide this power.
