Distilled Water for Battery- Introduction And Comparison

Nov 05, 2020   Pageview:519

Maintaining the batteries that have acid mechanisms is not as difficult as people think. It is because the main thing that you need to do is to maintain the level of water in the battery and your battery will never get bad before its time. However, the choice of water is very important that you will insert in your battery.

It is because the water will act as an electrolyte and it will have significant effects on the performance of the batteries. So, it is not only very important to select the right type of water for your battery, but it is also equally important to maintain a good level of water in the battery to keep it performing well for a longer time.

Here we will discuss the water that is used in the batteries.

Is battery water the same as distilled water?

This is one of the most common questions asked by people who are looking to get good care of their batteries. The reason for this confusion is that some manufacturers market their battery water as battery water while others market it as distilled water because it can be used for other purposes as well.

However, the names for both the products are different, the internal composition of both of them is the same. This makes them both the same and you can use any of those in your batteries to maintain the level of water in the battery.

How is distilled water made?

The process of making the distilled water is a bit different from regular purification. It is because purification takes some minerals out of the water while keeping some in it whereas this is not the requirement of the distilled water. So, the distilled water is made with the process of distillation to make it perfect for being used in the battery.

Are there any substitutes for the distilled water for battery?

Although the recommended water to use in the batteries is only the distilled water. However, you can use some other types of water in the batteries too if you do not have the access to the battery.

The reason for using other types of water in the battery is that it is better because using some other type of water will cause less damage as compared to the damage of using the battery with a low water level. So, some other types of water that you can use in the batteries are listed below.

  • Mineral water.

  • Springwater.

  • Deionized water.

  • Purified water.

Why is distilled water used in batteries?

Although there are a lot of water types that are all different because of the minerals present in them, only the distilled water is recommended in the battery. Most of the people ask for its reason because some do not have easy access to the distilled water. Although it is not very difficult to make the distilled water by yourself, some people still are unable to do this.

So, why is distilled water used in the batteries? Here we will discuss this in the light of some factors.

Free from contaminants.

The distilled water is made from a process that makes it free of most of the minerals and some other contaminants as well. Mainly the things removed from the water are those which might affect the performance of the battery. Some contaminants and minerals might affect the process of electrolysis that happens inside the battery and this thing affect the performance of the battery while charging and discharging.

Increases the life of the battery plates.

As the distilled water is free from most of the minerals and contaminants that are bad for the battery. When you maintain the water level inside the battery, this will make sure that the battery plates are getting the best environment for them to work. As they will be getting the most favorable environment their life will not decrease because of any external factors.

As the battery plates will be able to perform without any external factor depleting their life tenure, their life will be increased other than usual.

How do you make distilled water for batteries?

Although the distilled water is easily available at most of the online platforms and some local stores as well, some people still want to make their own distilled water for different purposes. IF you are also looking for the process of making the distilled water here, we have provided the step by step guide on making the distilled water.

Materials needed.

The first thing that you will need to do is to collect the necessary materials for making the distilled water. Here we have listed something that you will need.

  • Tap water.

  • A pot with a cover and moth must be made from stainless steel.

  • baking rack.

  • Ice.

  • Bowl of glass resistant to heat.

The step by step guide.

Here are the steps that you will need to follow when making the distilled water by yourself.

1.Preparing the stainless-steel pot.

The first thing you will need to do is to place the baking rack inside the stainless-steel pot and fill the pot almost half. The next thing will be placing the glass bowl on the baking rack inside the stainless-steel pot. You must make sure that the glass bowl is above the water level and it is not touching the bottom of the stainless-steel pot.

2.Covering the pot.

Now you can cover the pot with its lid but place the lid upside down while you put some ice on the top of the lid.

3.Boiling the water.

Boil the water for about 45 minutes and replace the ice when it seems to be necessary. You will have to use a lot of ice.

4.Harvesting the final product.

After 45 minutes, remove the glass bowl and let it cool. The water inside the glass bowl will be the distilled water. Make sure that no contaminant gets inside. Once the water is cool, you can put it in some container and use it later.

Final Thoughts

Taking good care of your batteries is nothing but most of the part is about maintaining the water level of the battery. That is why here we discussed the water used in the battery and we also provided the easy method to make that water at home.
