Batteries serve a lot of purposes in our daily lives. However, one of the major purposes of batteries in our life is for automobiles and home power backup systems. In these systems, lead-acid batteries are the batteries that are mostly used, and the average life of these batteries is about 5 years on average usage.
But one very interesting thing about these batteries is that when these batteries are used for 5 years, they can be reconditioned, and this will bring a lot of benefits. So, here we will discuss everything about rejuvenating the batteries that you must know.
The battery chargers have a special mode for the reconditioned batteries because this is the time when the battery cannot be charged like a regular battery. As this is a rarely used mode on the battery chargers, people are most curious to know about the working of this method. So, here we will discuss the recondition mode on the battery chargers.
Battery recondition mode is a mode present in the battery chargers that is usually known for its slow charging properties. As this is the time when the batteries cannot be charged like regular batteries, the amount of current provided in this mode is significantly low. So, in this mode, the max amount of current provided to the batteries is 2 amperes
How much chargers take to charge the battery in recondition mode.
As the charging speed in this mode for charging the batteries is very less, the time needed for charging the batteries is a lot as compared to that of the regular batteries. When you are charging the batteries in the recondition mode, this might take about 24 to 36 hours.
After the battery has been charged in the recondition mode, the voltage of the battery must be more than 12.4 volts. The perfect voltage for a battery after being charged is 12.6 volts. So, if the battery is fully charged, it should provide this voltage.
As the battery reconditioning method significantly decreases the cost that you have to spend on the new battery, most people think if it will be effective or not. It is all because of the confusion in people's minds about reconditioning the batteries.
However, battery reconditioning is a great thing that comes with a lot of benefits. So, here we will discuss some of the benefits of battery reconditioning.
Benefits of battery reconditioning.
The following are some great benefits of battery reconditioning that you do by yourself.
Increased Life
A regular battery can provide its services for about 5 to 10 years but most of the time, the batteries do not last up to 10 years. This is the time when you need to invest a lot of money in the new battery. However, if you go for reconditioning the battery by yourself, you can increase the life of your existing battery.
Amazing Cost Reduction
When you recondition the battery that you already have, there will be no need to buy a new one for some years. So, this will be very beneficial for your budget. It is because the reconditioning process takes very little money.
Great for the Environment
When a battery is replaced, the old one has a lot of things that are bad for the environment. Some of the things present in the battery are listed below.
Plastic.
Lead.
Acid.
Reconditioning the battery means that none of these are harming the environment as soon as they are under your usage.
Most of the time people are confused if they can rejuvenate the battery by themselves or not. This is something that nobody should worry about as this is a very simple process that everyone can do at home. So, here we will provide the step-by-step guide on how you can rejuvenate the battery by yourself at home.
Step-by-Step Guide on Rejuvenating Battery
The following are the steps that you will need to follow if you are looking to rejuvenate the battery by yourself.
1.Personal Protection
The first and the most important thing is personal protection. So, for this, you must use the proper protective equipment for your eyes and body as well. Some things that you can use are mentioned below.
Protective goggles.
Face mask.
Gloves.
Apron.
2.Cleaning the Battery Terminals
The next step will be cleaning the battery terminals. For this, you will need to remove any corrosion or gunk present at the battery terminals. For cleaning the battery terminals, you will need the following things.
Plastic or metal brush.
Baking soda and water solution in 2:1 ratio.
Sandpaper.
Steel wool.
3.Taking the Acid Out of the Battery
Now you can remove the acid of the battery by removing the cap of each cell. Make sure that you use a non-reactive container for removing the acid of the battery. You will also need to neutralize this solution by adding 500 grams of baking soda in the acid before disposing it off.
4.Filling the Battery Cells with Baking Soda Solution
Now fill the battery with a solution of water and baking soda in the ratio 1:1 or1:2. Close the battery caps and gently shake the battery for 30 seconds and then remove this solution from the battery.
5.Add a New Solution in the Battery
The new battery solution can be made by mixing one liter of distilled water with 120 grams of Epsom salt. Make sure to mix the solution so well that there is no solid particle left in the solution before you put it in the battery.
6.Charge the Battery
Charge the battery in recondition mode at 12 volts and 2 amps. The process may take 24 to 36 hours. After this your battery is ready.
7.Test the Battery
You can test the battery once it is charged. The charged battery must provide more than 12.4 volts. Additionally, under the load of the battery tester, it must maintain 9.6 volts for 15 seconds while the tester is at half CCA rating. If the battery successfully passes the test, then it is in good condition.
Batteries can cost a lot if you throw away all of the old batteries. So, you must know how you can save money by rejuvenating the batteries. Here we discussed the benefits and the steps required for rejuvenating the batteries.
