Batteries have various electrical uses due to their ability to store electrical energy. Because of this ability, batteries have a wide variety of uses right from the operation of watches, radios, computers, mobile phones, remote controls, and other electronic devices. Batteries are also the reason why you can start your car effectively in the morning and also the reason behind the functioning of many heavy-duty trucks and machines. By the look, a battery may only appear to be a store for electricity but in reality, there is an amazing science that involves the change of energy from one state to another. Because of the conversion of energy within the battery, it is categorized as a type of transducer by physicists. The electrical energy in batteries travels through their terminals the, cathode and the anode, or what we like to call positive and negative terminals.
What the battery does is convert the chemical energy stored in its active material to electrical energy through electrochemical oxidation-reduction. This reaction involves the movement of electrons from one material to another through battery terminals via an electric circuit. Batteries are able to move charge because of their terminals and these terminals require terminal connectors that link them to electric cables. Here are the different types of battery terminals that you need to know.
Battery terminal connector types
Different types of battery connectors depend on the efficiency, usage, and type of material making up the connector. Here are the various types of battery connectors that you need to know about.
Auto-post battery terminals.?The auto post battery connectors are the most common types of battery terminals that are found in many cars, trucks, and other types of machinery. This is because of their efficiency in conductivity and durability. Furthermore, the auto-post terminals have a positive terminal that is bigger than its negative which helps prevent reverse polarity in case you accidentally connect the terminal wrongly.
The stud battery terminals.?These stainless-steel threaded battery terminals are mostly found in medium and heavy-duty trucks on the road. Their design enables these terminals to securely fasten and effectively hold the connection onto the terminal lead base of the battery. By the look, this type of terminal normally looks like an upright bolt or stud.
Pencil post battery terminals.?The pencil post battery connector types are identical connectors with a smaller circumference and are best designed for smaller battery cars because of their size which is deliberately designed to fit in smaller places. The pencil post type of connection is mostly found in japan made cars and trucks.
Button battery terminals.?Also known as battery terminals, the button battery terminals are designed for use on absorbed glass mat batteries, emergency backup installations, and uninterruptible power systems. These battery terminals come in two sizes; the M5 and the M8 in metric measurements. For instance, if your battery terminal is 8mm, the bolt you use on it should have a diameter thread that is 8mm for it to fit effectively.
Dual post battery terminals.?Commonly referred to as the marine battery terminals, the dual post battery terminals are designed with a 5/16-16 stud and 3/8 -16 automotive post. The 3/8 automotive post connects the positive terminal of the battery while the 56 connects the negative terminal. The connection to the battery using the dual post battery terminals is done with either a normal pressure contact or a wing-nut configuration connector. These types of battery connectors are found in marine battery applications, off-the-grid solar-application battery setups, and floor scrubbers.
12v battery connector types
Battery terminal connectors are the conductors that are the platform that completes the connection between your electrical cable and your 12 vols lead-acid battery. There are various 12 connectors and they are used depending on their suitability.
Copper battery terminals.?Cooper terminal connectors are used because they are highly conductive and offer good conductive strength. These battery terminals Copper Battery terminals are tinned to prevent corrosion and they are used also due to their ease of soldering and being crimping.?
Brass battery terminals.?Brass terminals are used in environments that could corrode other battery terminals and therefore they are mostly used in batteries that are in marine environments. Brass battery terminals are harder than their lead and copper counterparts and it's advisable to solder them. For all corrosive environments, it's best to use brass instead of copper or lead.
Lead battery terminals.?Lead battery terminals are used because they are malleable and easy to work with. These are common with most average mechanics because they aren’t any complicated and so they are easier to attach and can be used in basic connections.
Battery terminal multiple connections
There are circumstances where you may need to use more than one battery in the supply of electricity. Connections with more than one battery are very common and they are applicable everywhere from basic electronic connections to heavy-duty battery connections that involve high voltage electricity. Multiple battery terminal connections require care and precision to avoid confusion and some skills as well. Normally, there are two main types of multiple battery connections and that is the parallel and series type of connection.
In multiple connections, it is important to know the right battery terminal connectors to use depending on the environment, type of machinery to be used, and the complexity of the circuit. The two types of battery arrangements that involve multiple terminal connections are the;
Series multiple terminal connections
In a series connection, batteries of the same voltage and amp-hour capacities are connected to make the voltage of the assembly increase. In a series connection, there are multiple terminals and so multiple terminal connectors are used as well. The positive battery terminals are connected to the positive terminal connectors while the negative battery terminals are connected to the negative connectors. This series continues until the required voltage is acquired.
Parallel multiple terminal connections
In the parrel type of connection, several batteries of the same voltage are connected to increase the overall assembly capacity. Unlike in the series connection where the positive terminals are connected to the negative terminals, in parallel multiple connections, the positive battery terminals are connected to the positive terminal connectors and the negative to the negative. the overall voltage and current are the same as the voltage and current of each battery. In this connection, the terminal connections should be by their suitability based on environment, ease of use, or type of machinery the batteries are being used.
