Battery Charger Displays: Introduction, Lights, and Repair Mode

Nov 30, 2020   Pageview:674

Even though a battery can be considered as long-lasting, it is bound to lose its energy sooner or later. When it happens, we will need our battery charger to bring it back to life.

Seeing how the battery charger can light up a dead battery, we can see its importance. Hence, we should always treat the battery charger as precious as the battery too. Of course, it also means that we should get the best battery charger for the batteries too. Here, we will talk about battery chargers and some of its concepts, such as the types of batteries, the lights, and repair mode.

How do you know if your battery charger is charging?

To understand how a battery charges, it is important for us to know the kinds of battery charger that is available out there. Here are some battery chargers you might know:

●Simple charger ? as the name states simple charger simply supplies the charger with a pulsed DC power source. It doesn’t do anything with the process, and it does not change anything based on charging time or the battery’s charge. Nevertheless, because it is so simple, the charging time might be slow compared to other chargers. It is, however, pretty inexpensive and affordable.

●Fast charger ? fast charger is the battery charger that would use a power circuit to charge the battery as soon as possible. There is no need to worry about damage, as they are able to do so without damaging the battery. They usually have cooling fans to keep the temperature in check.

●Intelligent charger ? intelligent charger, or smart charger, is a charger which is able to read the condition of the battery. So when the battery is half full or dying, the charger can read the battery’s condition and charge it. It should be noted that an intelligent charger is always accompanied with a smart battery. Smart battery is a battery that is able to send out information about its condition to the charger, allowing the charger to charge it when it’s not at its full condition. So the two sides work together to create a smart batter-battery charger relationship.

●Pulse charger ? pulse charger, or battery generator, is the charger where the voltage or current pulse is being fed to the battery. The feeding of the pulse to the battery allows high voltage to be given to the battery in periods of time. Doing so will also be able to charge the battery without overheating it, so there would be no need to worry about the temperature.

As it can be seen, there are many kinds of battery chargers out there. However, most of them use a similar system to show whether they are charging the battery or not. That method is no other than using lights. The charging indication will be discussed in the next section.

What do the lights mean on a battery charger?

Three are three kinds of lights you can see on a battery charger. The three lights are normal yellow light flashing yellow light, and green light. In some batteries, the color red would appear at times too.

Normal Yellow Light

If the light is on in the color of yellow, it means that the battery charger is being supplied with AC power from the electricity. This process usually happens when you plug the charger into the power socket. When the color is like this, it means that the battery charger is ready to be used.

Flashing Yellow Light

There are some battery chargers with flashing yellow lights when they are used. This indicates that the charger is currently charging the battery right now. The energy of the battery is being replenished by the charger, where the charger converts the energy from the electricity to the one that’s suitable for the battery. So when the yellow light is not flashing, it’s a good sign that everything is doing good.

Green Light

Green light usually indicates that the battery has done charging, and that the battery is full. When the light is green, it’s best to take out the battery from the charger as soon as possible. Leaving the battery stays in the charger despite its status being full will eventually damage the battery, and the battery’s output might not be as its maximum because of this. So it’s best to take out the battery as soon as possible. In order to be able to do this, it’s best to charge the battery near you so you can see when the battery is filled up right away.

Red Light

Some batteries show red light when the battery is being charged. There is no need to worry, because the red light indicates that the battery is being charged. Usually, when you’re charging cell phones, you will get this kind of light. So don’t be shocked when the light is read. There is nothing wrong with the battery!

What does repair mode do on the battery charger?

There are some manufacturers that have the repair mode option in battery chargers. This option is best used for batteries that have already sulfated. Batteries that cannot be charged fully or are drained quickly can also be fixed in this mode.

It should be noted that this mode uses high charging voltage. If the battery is wet/flooded cell batteries, there is a chance that the battery will suffer from water loss. To use this mode, it’s best to charge the battery in full first. It should also be noted that this mode can take a while (up to 4 hours), so you will need to be patient.

Battery charger is as important as the batteries. Therefore, we should get battery chargers that can give proper charging and, if possible, has a repair mode. So it will not only charge the batteries but also help them in case the battery is sulfated or no longer in its maximum mode. So what are you waiting for?
