Batteries usually contain a collection of one or more cells and as a result of chemical reaction of these plates electrons flow in a circuit. All batteries are made up of three main components anode (which is the positive terminal of the battery), cathode (which is the negative terminal of the battery) and an electrolyte (an aqueous solution usually in a liquid or molten phase) that are connected with other batteries components in series or parallel way of connection. Both the anode and cathode are electrodes that are responsible for conducting electricity. A separator is often used to prevent anode and cathode from touching. Batteries are of two types, first is the primary battery that must be thrown away after usage and the second one is secondary battery which can be recharge again and again for use.
It is often said that a modern battery was developed by Alessandro Volta. It actually started with a surprising accident and this process includes the dissection of frogs. There are two ways to hook up two batteries together, series and parallel. When you are connecting two batteries in series, it means you are adding voltage of two batteries but the amp hour capacity will remain the same. For example, if you hook up two 6 volt 4.5 amp hours batteries in series connection, then the two batteries will be capable of delivering 12 volts (6 volts + 6 volts) and 4.5 amp hours and A 6 volt 5 Ah battery and a 12 volt 5 Ah battery connected in series will give a supply of 18 volts (6 volts + 12 volts) and 5 Ah. A 6 volt battery is frequently three 2 volt cells and a 12 volt battery is generally six 2 volt cells. Along these lines, all you have done is associated nine 2 volt cells together to get 18 volts
The truth is that no 6 volt battery is exactly 6 volts and no 12 volt battery is exactly 12 volts. Individual cell voltages can vary, even if you are dealing with batteries of the same brand and manufacturer. A 12 volt battery can have a cell voltage of 2.1 volts and a 6 volt battery can have a cell voltage of 2.2 volts. This can however be very easy to read with a voltmeter if you want to check.
If you are Connecting batteries of different voltages in series, matching amp hour ratings will be much more difficult. The 6 volt battery may truly be a 5.2 Ah, while the 12 volt battery may be 5.5 Ah. Amp hour ratings are also much harder to check without accurately discharging both of the units at the same rate under the similar conditions and accurately measuring the results.
You must have to check with the manufacturer to look at how they arrived at their amp hour rating, because different manufacturers use distinctive processes and not all 5 Ah batteries are 5 Ah in the way you think. Some manufacturers will claim their battery is 5 Ah using the “20 hour rating”, while others will say their battery is 5 Ah using the “100 hour rating”.
Is it better to connect batteries in series or parallel?
It is difficult to say which connection is better because both ways have their own pros and cons. If we talk about bulbs, then they are mostly arranged in parallel as parallel connection gives more brightness than series. While comparing the lifespan of batteries, series connection is better than parallel because parallel circuits have to produce more electricity than series so they are quickly used up. In a series connection, the amount of current flowing through the two appliances is the same whereas, in case of a parallel connection, the voltage across each appliance is the same. A parallel circuit can consume more power when compared to a series circuit. At the same time, parallel circuits can be more robust. By this fact we can say that it is better to connect batteries in series as compared to parallel.
How to Hook up Batteries in Series?and Parallel
To hook up two batteries in series, connect the negative terminal of one battery to the positive terminal of the other battery in such a way that the current across each terminal remains the same. To hook up two batteries in parallel, connect the negative terminal of one battery with the negative terminal of the other battery and the same process is done with the positive terminal in such a way that the voltage across each terminal remains the same. If you want to connect the batteries in series, each battery must have the same voltage and capacity rating, otherwise you will damage the batteries potentially.
How to Hook up 2 12 Volt Batteries in an RV
To hook up two 12 v batteries in an RV, parallel connection is the best. This is one of the most favourable setup for RV manufacturers, developers and dealers. Voltage should be kept the same around each battery, that is why the positive terminal is connected to the positive terminal and negative terminal is connected to the negative terminal. Each wire coming from each battery requires to be the same in length otherwise you will add more resistance to one battery than others and the circuit will be unbalanced. As a result of this un balancing, the circuit or battery can explode and you may face short circuiting or electrical sparks.
Conclusion
In short, connecting batteries in series and parallel will work but if connected with different voltages and capacities, damage will be done to both batteries during the discharge and recharge cycles. The more one is damaged, the more the other one will be damaged and a time will come when both will need to be replaced. So if you want to connect your batteries for long term use, you should use check voltages and AH capacities before connecting.
