Although the battery terminal does not seem to be a vital part of the battery performance and life, it has great importance for the battery. It is because the terminal of the battery is responsible for providing a good connection between the battery and the load.
Considering this importance, different types of battery terminals are made to make sure every user gets the best option. So, here we will discuss some types of battery terminals and connectors.
There are different batteries. Some of them are used for cars while others are used for other vehicles and power generators. However, one thing that is almost the same for all the batteries is the terminal of those batteries. It is because the purpose of the battery terminals is the same. But there is one problem that the terminals cannot be made very small to very large.
It is because the small ones can get damaged while the large ones will take a lot of space. So, there is an average size of battery terminal that is kept consistent all across the world.
The Average Size of a Battery Terminal:
The average size for the battery terminal is ranging from 8 to 15 mm. However, most of the batteries have a terminal of 10mm in size. This size is the almost perfect size because it is neither too weak that it might break because of the engine’s vibration. Similarly, it is also not too big to occupy a lot of space. This makes it a terminal size that is widely used.
The Average Size of the Tools Required for Opening the Socket:
One thing that is also kept consistent all over the world is the size of the tools that are required to open the battery terminal or the connector. As it is difficult to have a lot of tools in the cars and other compact vehicles, the tools required are needed to be as minimum as possible.
For this cause, the tool needed for opening the battery is 10 mm in size. This size is maintained all over the world for most of the battery connectors regardless of the size.
Although the need for the battery terminal is the same for all the batteries, there are still some things that can be differentiated upon a different basis. These things make the need of having different battery terminals. So, some battery terminals are used for different kinds of batteries and here we will discuss some of them.
The Types of Battery Terminals:
There are 4 main types of the battery terminal depending on the material used for making them. Here we will discuss the characteristics of each 4 of these battery terminals.
Lead Terminals
The most used type of battery terminal is the lead battery terminals. It is used because of its advantage to work as a fuse. Lead has a melting point of 327 degrees and in the case of a severe short circuit, this battery terminal can act as a fuse by melting and disconnecting. However, one disadvantage of these terminals is that they are not as conductive as the copper ones.
Copper Terminals
Although this is the best material to use as a battery terminal, it is the rarely used type of battery terminal. It is because of the increased costs for making the copper terminals. One major benefit of using copper terminals is that they do not oxidize very easily.
Brass Terminals
Brass terminals are cheap and easy to find and they also have high oxidation resistance. This makes them durable however one thing that is not good here is that the material is very bendy and breakable so it might break while tightening the connector.
Bronze Terminals
It is the cheapest and the most commonly used type of battery terminals.
One thing that is very important for the battery terminals is that they must be fastened tightly. IF they are night as tight as they should be and they are loose, then there could be several problems. Here we will discuss some of the problems that could be caused because the battery terminal is loose.
The problems are caused by loose battery terminals:
The following are the problems that can be caused by the loose battery terminals.
Sparking and Corrosion
When the battery terminal is not connected tightly, there is not a good path for the flow of charges. This causes heat when the charges pass through the battery terminal. As a result of heat, the wires can get hot as well.
Additionally, this problem can cause sparking between the battery terminal and the connector of the battery and this will be bad for both the terminal and the battery as well. This sparking issue will not only cause a fire hazard, but it will also cause corrosion on the battery terminal that can be implementing long-lasting damage.
Improper Charging and Discharging
When the terminals of the battery are loosely connected, the charging and discharging process cannot be conducted properly. This will cause the battery to lose its life and the battery will also not be able to provide power backup for an extended time.
Bad Performance of the Battery
The battery will not perform well because of loose connectors. This can cause fluctuation and non-consistent power delivery. This issue can be very harmful for the load and the environment as well. Especially in cars, the loosely connected battery terminals can cause the electronics of the car to burn and this will be very costly damage.
Batteries are now so much indulged in our life that almost everything we use has a battery in it. Although this is a great thing, this causes many problems, and the batteries make us dependent upon them for the smallest of tasks.
Battery terminals are a very important part of battery usage because they provide efficient power delivery. So, here we discussed the size, type, and working of the battery menials.
