A bulb or light bulb is used for light distribution in most houses or buildings. The bulb contains many parts that help it achieve its lighting purpose. Some of these significant parts include; glass globe, glass stem, metal filament, metal base, and gases.

The outermost part of the bulb is known as the globe, and it is used to support the other parts of the bulb and ensure maximum light provision. The stem is usually made of glass, and its purpose is to support the filament. The wires are used to enhance the flow of electricity throughout the circuit.

There are inert gases such as argon and nitrogen within the globe, which are present to reduce the chances of the filament burning out or breaking the glass. The base is used to transfer electricity from the main source to the bulb itself, and it also supports all the other parts of the bulb. Lastly, tungsten is used to provide light. On the other hand, a battery has three major parts: ' Anode Cathode and the electrolyte.

Which part or parts of the battery need to be involved in the circuit for the bulb to light?

As mentioned earlier, the bulb has three major parts: Anode (positive terminal), Cathode (negative terminal), and electrolyte, which is the liquid in which electrons from one terminal to the other. To answer the above question, both the positive and negative terminals need to be involved for the bulb to light.

A cathode is a negatively charged electrode, which means that the positive ions are attracted to the cathode. In other words, the cathode is the source of electrons that travel to the anode. The flow of these electrons generates a current that lights up the bulb.

An anode is a positively charged electrode, and it acts as the opposite of the cathode. The anode received the electrons that are negative and produced from the cathode. There must be a bulb, battery, tape, and a wire for a simple circuit to be complete. If any of these alement is missing then the circuit will not work.

The process is quite simple, connect the wire using the tape to the negative part of your battery that is the cathode, and use another piece of the wire to connect to the positive terminal (Anode). Use the other ends of the wires to connect to the bulb's base, and you will experience some lighting.

What happens to the light bulb when it is connected to the battery?

Always, when you connect a light bulb to a battery, you either expect it to light or not. The difference comes from how the connection is made and if the circuit is connected well. Use two wires, a battery, a bulb, and tape to check what happens when you connect the battery to the light bulb.

Cut off the insulation on each side of the wires, ensuring you don't damage or cut the wire. Connect both wires to the batteries and use the tape to hold the wires firm on each terminal. Start the connection from the negative side of the battery and finish with the positive side. Once the connection is made, take the remaining part of the wires and attach them to the bulb.

You will notice that once the connection is fully made, your light bulb will produce light. What happens is that electrons flow from the negative terminal of the battery to the positive terminal hence creating a circuit and current that lights up the light bulb.

In case the connection is made poorly, then you may not see your light bulb lit. Always ensure your wires are attached to both negative and positive terminals. The other reason your light bulb may not light is if the wires being used are damaged. Besides, if the battery is dead or has no charge, then the light bulb may not light at all after connection.

How do you test a lightbulb with a battery?

First, ensure that you have a new battery or one that you are sure of its performance. When you use the battery on your light bulb and it lights, you should know that your bulb is in good condition. However, if the circuit is completed and the bulb doesn't light, you should consider buying another bulb.

The process of testing is as simple and similar to that discussed above. Begin by getting new batteries or those that are charged. Secondly, you may choose to use wires to complete your circuit or aluminium foil. If your choice is aluminium foil, then use just a piece of foil. Place the foil against the battery's negative side and ensure it's on a flat surface and hold it there.

Place the bulb on top of the battery's positive terminal with its metal base against the terminal. Next, pick the remaining part of the foil and place it in between the bulb's metal base and the positive terminal. You can also just place the remaining part of the foil to just touch the bulb's metal base. Once you have done all that, your bulb is expected to show light. In case you cannot see the light, you will know that your light bulb has an issue, and you should consider replacing it with a brand new bulb.

Conclusion

One can test if a bulb is working by using a battery, an alternative to the use of a multimeter. The bulb parts have clearly shown that each is equally important, and it has a role to play. Always remember to connect your bulb and battery the right way, and you will get good results. Using a new battery always will give you clear results when you are testing your lightbulb. Lastly, if you cannot access a multimeter, you may use a wire or an aluminum foil to check whether your battery is okay or your light bulb is in good condition.
