Ultra capacitors are a special type of batteries that have two metal plates that are imbedded in some container type box and there is some insulation between these plates. The insulation that is present in the between of this two plates then offers them the chance of creating a field of charge in the air that is present between the two. This then acts as an area of charge. The plates are coated with a sponge like substance made out of carbon that works like a charm and helps in maintaining the functionality of the ultra-capacitor. The ultra-capacitors have the same functionality as the capacitor. Just like the capacitors store their charge in between the two plates however unlike the capacitor which uses air as the insulation the ultra-capacitor uses some sort of electrolyte that helps in the uniform distribution of the charges around the capacitor. This helps them to make sure that they have the best source of charge as compared to the traditional and simple capacitors. 

Just like in the natural capacitor when the charge is supplied to the battery, it gets charged, this assists the instrument in the normal functioning and work. So one might think if there is no difference between the two then why the discrimination? Well the ultra-capacitors are not exactly the same to the capacitors, they have a double charge on themselves instead of one, and thus they are also labeled as double layered capacitors. The other difference between the capacitor and the ultra-capacitor is that the capacitors that are of traditional nature mainly use the electric field that is present between the two plates as a medium to store the charge, this is however not true in the case of the ultra-capacitors because they unlike the traditional ones inject the chemicals into the electrode, they have the ability to store the electricity and the charge in the form of the ions of chemical nature. This is also one major difference that is present between the two types of capacitors. These results in the ultra-capacitors having much more charge hence the name ultra.

Working of the Capacitors

When you are talking about the capacitors and the ultra-capacitors there is no such big difference only the features of the ultra-capacitors are enhanced to a much higher level this is shown by the amount of space that is present between the plates of the two capacitor plates. This is something that is greatly different in both the capacitors. In the case of the normal and traditional regular capacitors the space between the two plates is done by the help of ceramic paper, the space is although quite small and measured in the numbers of microns but the space between the two plates in an ultra-capacitor is measured in the form of nanometers which is considerably smaller as compared to the regular or traditional capacitor. 

Now why do we care so much about how tiny the space between the plates is? The only reason we care is that when we look at physics we notice that in the equation the closer the space is the greater the charge will be. The shorter the distance will be the greater will be amount of the electric field that has been generated and thus the greater will be the charge that is able to store in the capacitor.

The reason why the ultra-capacitors are much more important and useful as compared to the regular ones is because they have been coated with a layer of carbon that is so spongy that it have the ability to increase the surface area of the electrode from a mere ten thousand to a hundred thousand! That’s right it has the ability to increase the surface area of the electrodes to a much more level, this then increases the numbers of the charges that can be stored in the electrode of the capacitor. This allows for a greater surface area for the electrons and the charges to cling on to the surface of the electrode.

Is ultra-capacitor battery good for cars?

Well in a sense technically speaking the car batteries if replaced by the ultra-capacitors will work much better and in much more advanced fashion, the reason bieng that the ultra-capacitor has the ability to store much more charge as compared to the traditional lithium-ion batteries which are much better than the counterparts such as the nickel-cadmium batteries and the lead acid batteries. These batteries really do have the potential to change the future of the batteries of the car, if they are replaced then the cars will be much more efficient, however there are several other complications as well when you talk about replacing that actual car batteries with these batteries, are they economical? Will they be practical? Although these are experiments that have yet to be underdone, one thing is for sure that if you want the future is clear, it is technically possible.
