A car battery is a pivotal part of the car. After all, it is one of the objects that allow cars to be able to run properly. Hence, it’s important for us to take care of it properly. We need to be able to know how to care for it, including how to charge it. Since many of us tend to be at home, there are people who would like to know how to charge a car battery with home electricity. If you are one of them, we have the basic tips and tricks to do it for you.
So that people will not get confused with the terms, let’s talk about car battery and home inverter first.
As stated before, the car battery is one of the pivotal factors that allow cars to start up. Without car batteries, cars would not be able to gain the electricity current they need to start up the engine.
A home inverter is another word for back-up electricity for houses. The purpose of a home inverter is to convert the stored DC current to AC current since AC current is the current that is used for things run related to electricity.
Since a home inverter allows the conversion of DC to AC, the answer is yes, we can actually charge a car battery with a home inverter. However, now we have the question: is it safe to charge a car battery with a home inverter? After all, a battery car is pretty costly. One wrong move and we can change a brand new battery to an unusable one.
Although charging with a home inverter is quicker in nature, it is recommended not to do this too often. Rather than a backup power supply, it is best to charge with a proper source of electricity.
For those who want to charge a car battery with home electricity, here are the steps to do it:
1. Connect the car battery with the home inverter.
The first thing you should do is making sure that you connect the car battery with the power supply properly. You can do so by connecting the negative part of the battery to the black wire of the inverter. After that, connect the positive part to the red wire.
Make sure that the wires are properly connected with the right parts, or else the battery may explode once it’s plugged in.
2. Make sure that everything is good.
Once you’ve connected the cables, it’s time for you to check on the connection between the inventor and the electricity. If the connection is good, plug the inverter to the electricity.
3. Start the charging.
Once you’ve plugged the inverter, all you need to do is to wait until the battery is properly charged. That’s it, you’re done!
Although it is ok to charge a car battery using a home inverter, using a proper charger and electricity is still the best way to do it. Here are some steps to charge a car battery with a proper charger:
1. Prepare the surrounding.
The first thing you need to do is prepare yourself. To prepare yourself, you will need to use non-electric gloves and, if necessary, face protection. Make sure there are no flammable objects or water around you to prevent unnecessary accidents. Once you’ve done so, it’s time to prepare the charging process.
2. Take out the battery.
After preparing the surrounding, you will need to take out the battery from the car. All you need to do is remove the battery according to the proper steps. First, you will need to remove the black wire (negative side). After that, remove the red wire (positive side).
Don’t forget to clean the build-up on the battery! You can do so by wiping the battery’s surface using a wet cloth dabbed with baking soda. If not, you can use sandpaper.
3. Connect the battery with the charger.
Just like before, you can charge the battery by connecting the negative part first, then the positive part. The connection is mostly done using connectors.
When you do it, make sure you do the process wearing non-electric gloves as there is still a possibility of fire. Moreover, you need to do this when the charger is not connected to the power outlet.
Once you’ve connected the parts properly and check the power outlet, it’s time to plug the charger to the power!
4. Charge the battery.
You can leave the battery alone when it’s charging, as most chargers would notify you when the charging is done. The charging would take around 6 to 12 hours, depending on the capacity of the battery. In fact, most of them would spend at least 12 hours charging. Due to the amount of time needed for charging, it’s best to charge the battery at night, since you can sleep the battery away. So when you wake up, the battery is already full and charged.
If you don’t want to charge for a long period of time, you can give it extra energy by regularly driving the car. The kinetic energy will supply the battery with more energy.
As it can be seen, there are various ways to charge the battery. The first and most prioritized way is to use a proper charger. When you use a proper charger, you need to prepare yourself and the surrounding. Only then you can connect the charger to the car battery properly. Of course, you must connect in proper steps too. The second option is to use a home inverter. It’s as easy as charging with a proper charger, but it is best to do so only when there is no charger.
Once you have the necessary equipment, charge the batter away!
