Non-Spillable Battery – Introduction, Safety and Shipment

Jan 09, 2021   Pageview:2801

Most nations in the entire world are focusing on the ways that we can reduce pollution. It is the duty of everyone to take care of the environment we live in. some campaigns aim to educate people on their safety and other living things.

Therefore, the battery manufacturers have a role to play too. They have designed sealed batteries that are environmentally friendly. If these batteries are used in boats, the water sources will remain safe because there is no spillage.

The most important thing with these non-spillable batteries is that you are safe when using them. There is no risk of acid spillage at any time. They also provide the voltage that you need to run various devices, including vehicles and ships.

Therefore, we shall look at the details of non-spillable batteries, how they are hazardous, and how they can be shipped. I know this issue is of great interest to you; thus, stay tuned and get the best out of it.

What is a non-spillable battery?

The word non-spillable is a bit confusing, and one can confuse it with sealed batteries. A battery that is sealed cannot be automatically non-spillable. The batteries termed as non-spillable are the sealed lead-acid batteries using Gel or Absorbent Glass Matt (AGM) technology.

Sealed standard lead-acid batteries with liquid electrolytes are spillable. The CFR and the International Air Transport Association in the United States define non-spillable batteries as batteries with no free-flowing liquid. The electrolyte should never flow through a cracked cover at 55 degrees Celsius.

These non-spillable batteries have several regulations, especially when transporting them. Non-spillable batteries are not subject to ADR requirements because the electrolyte will not flow from a cracked cover casing, and there is no free liquid to flow.

These non-spillable batteries are used in devices such as wheelchairs, and they are securely tightened in the battery holder on the device and protected in a manner as to prevent damage and short circuits. The battery must be disconnected when not in use, and the terminals should be covered to avoid short-circuiting.

These non-spillable batteries are not subject to RID requirements if, at the temperature of 55 degrees Celsius, the electrolyte will not flow from a ruptured case and no free fluid to flow. Therefore, non-spillable batteries need to satisfy certain conditions.

It can be hard to distinguish a non-spillable battery from a spillable battery if you have little knowledge of batteries. Most people will talk about sealed batteries being non-spillable, which is not valid, and the things said above will prove them wrong.

There are so many regulations that govern batteries' transportation, especially from one country to the other. The battery must first be proven non-spillable so that other regulations can be removed and shipping can be quickly done. We shall later in this article look at the regulations that govern the transportation of these batteries internationally.

Are non-spillable batteries hazardous?

The non-spillable batteries are considered subject to a lot of verification to ensure that they are safe. They can be hazardous if subjected to too high temperatures. Therefore, the company that makes these batteries must meet the minimum requirements to attain transportation permits.

These batteries are made of lead, which is a hazardous component. However, the sealed non-spillable batteries are much safe as long the right materials are used to make them. There are safety measures that are provided by the manufacturer so that everyone remains safe.

Several bodies in the United States are mandated to ensure that all batteries are safe for human use. Any batteries that are considered hazardous cannot be allowed to be sold in any country regardless of the quality.

Therefore, our safety is much important than the product itself. Follow the guidelines given by the manufacturer whenever you are using any battery that has flammable signs and any other warning signs that will help you to stay safe.

When you want to transport a non-spillable battery by aircraft, it must be transported as luggage and should not be carried onboard an aircraft by passengers or crew personnel in the carry-on package. When the non-spillable battery is contained in a battery-powered device, equipment, or vehicle, it must be prepared and packaged for transport to prevent unintentional activation in conformance.

The non-spillable batteries must be securely packed in a strong outer packaging or secured to skids or pallets capable of sustaining the shocks usually incident to transportation. They should be well packed to avoid any damage that can cause hazardous effects. Any material loaded with non-spillable batteries must be blocked, braced to prevent damage and short circuits in transit.

Can you ship a non-spillable battery?

Non-spillable batteries can be shipped but under specific regulations given by different nations. Non-spillable lead-acid batteries are listed as Class 8 corrosive hazardous materials in the United States and international hazardous materials.

These batteries are also subject to regulations to specific packaging, marking, labeling, and shipping paper requirements. These non-spillable batteries are given an exception to the regulations if specific testing and marking requirements.

The requirements that must be met include:

  • The battery must be securely packaged and protected against short circuits.

  • The battery and the outer packaging must have a label that is plainly and durably marked "NON-SPILLABLE" or "NON-SPILLABLE BATTERY."

  • The battery must sustain the following tests without the battery fluid leakage: vibration test and pressure differential rest.

At 55 degrees Celsius temperature, the battery must not have any unabsorbed free-flowing liquid and must be made so that the electrolyte will never flow from the cracked case.
