The battery is an essential object needed for running various household devices. The battery is the source of power to car engines while mobile devices cannot run without a battery. The battery serves as the alternative to electrical energy to run many appliances, like audio and video players, radio, and laptops. However, different types of batteries are available in the market, based on their sizes and uses.

Battery Names Sizes

Different kinds of batteries are classified according to their sizes, irrespective of their brands. The sizes of these batteries determine their functions in specific devices.

?AA Battery – It is the most common size of the battery, widely used in pencil torches and most devices. All the leading brands manufacture this type of battery, which is highly durable and also called the LR6 Battery of 1.5V. It may be made of Lithium, alkaline chemical, or zinc, among which Lithium battery is most durable. However, all AA batteries are non-rechargeable.

AAA Battery – This battery is smaller in size than the AA battery and is also needed to operate many important devices. Leading brands manufacture this battery in bulk quantities, due to its huge demand in the market. Generally, alkaline AAA batteries are more available even though Lithium AAA batteries are more long-lasting.

C Battery – This battery is needed to run TV remotes, alarm clocks, and many other household devices. It can also be used in some industrial equipment, to provide the required power to run these appliances. It is available in both rechargeable and non-rechargeable forms so that consumers can use whatever is needed.

D Battery – Generally, this battery is used in torches, radios, TV remotes, and digital cameras. Both rechargeable and non-rechargeable D batteries are manufacturing by reputed companies in bulk numbers. Thus, customers can get these batteries at affordable prices

AAAA Battery – This battery is marked for its ultra-slim shape and it is used in some latest electronic equipments. It is an alkaline battery that is usually available in a pack of 2 in the market.

LR44 Battery – It is also called AG13 battery or A76 battery. This 1.5V battery is normally used in calculators, digital thermometers, and modern electronic toys. This tiny battery is also used in Christmas lights. This alkaline battery is available in a pack of 1, 2, or a bulk pack of 10 in the market.

9V PP3 Battery – 9V batteries are used in running many industrial machines. Hence, owners of healthcare industries and entertainment industries buy this type of battery in bulk numbers. It is also installed in fire alarms, walkie-talkie devices, remote control toys, and some audio systems.

Low Temperature High Energy Density Rugged Laptop Polymer Battery Battery specification: 11.1V 7800mAh -40℃ 0.2C discharge capacity ≥80% Dustproof, resistance to dropping, anti - corrosion, anti - electromagnetic interference

Button Cell Battery – This type of tiny battery can be easily fitted into watches, electronic games, remote control toys, and digital calculators. Though this battery is highly durable, it automatically loses charge if left unused for a long time.

There are many other varieties of batteries classified based on their sizes. N LR1 battery, 6LR61 battery, CR2 Battery, CR2025 Battery, and Lithium AA AAA Battery are only a few examples of the large number of battery names, differentiated as per their sizes.

Battery Names List

Batteries are given different names according to their functions or after their inventors. The battery is broadly classified as Primary or non-rechargeable battery and Secondary or rechargeable battery. A battery is also named after the device to which it is usually fitted for use.

Alkaline Battery – It is an alkaline battery made of metal zinc, carbon, and manganese dioxide. It is a primary battery that gets its required energy from the reactions of these chemicals. Hence, it is non-rechargeable and should be thrown away when all the chemicals turn into other compounds after the chemicals reactions.

Calcium ion Battery – This battery is used for storing electrochemical energy that can be delivered for later uses whenever needed. Its electrodes and electrolyte contain free Calcium (Ca) ions, which carry charges between the cathode and anode.  It also acts as a multivalent battery, using multivalent ions of Ca2+ for carrying charges.

Dry Cell – This is the battery used in most electrical devices, as its application is more convenient compared to other batteries. It is easily portable due to its slightly moist electrolyte that does not spill out due to movements. Usually, ammonium chloride paste is used as the electrolyte with a zinc anode and carbon cathode.

Lithium-ion Battery – This is a rechargeable battery in which Lithium ions travel from the negatively charged anode to the positively charged cathode while the battery is discharged. Again, the Li ions move from the cathode to the anode when the battery is charged. Thus, it uses any reversible Lithium compound as cathode and graphite as an anode. It is used in most mobile devices, portable electronic appliances, and electric vehicles.

Galvanic Cell – It is also called a voltaic cell, named after its inventors Galvani and Volta. It is an electrochemical battery where electricity is automatically generated. A large battery contains several galvanic cells, making it a continuous powerhouse for driving cars and other electronic devices.

Backup Battery – It is also called inverter battery, as it supplies power backup to the electrical system during a power cut. It makes sure to provide an uninterrupted power supply even if the primary electric supply is off. This rechargeable battery is charged when the main power supply is on. However, this battery is also used in computers, aircraft, security alarm systems, and video games.

There are also numerous battery names available in the market, as per their components or applications. Aluminum-ion battery, Lead-acid battery, Flow battery, Glass battery, Automotive battery, Mercury battery, and Paper battery are some examples of commonly used batteries for various personal and industrial uses.

Battery Names in Different Languages

The word ‘battery’ is an English word that is mainly used in all English-speaking countries. However, the battery is called ‘bateria’ in the Portuguese language, ‘batteri’ in the Norwegian language, and ‘batterie’ in French and German languages. It is called ‘pila’ in the Spanish language, ‘akku’ in the Finnish language, and ‘batterij’ in the Dutch language. Battery is named ‘Paparia’ in the Arabic language, ‘bataria’ in the Russian language, ‘Denchi’ in the Japanese language, ‘Dianchi’ in the Chinese language, and ‘baeteoli’ in the Korean language.

Therefore, people need to specify the battery name when they go to a store for buying batteries as per their requirements.
