Circuit With Two Batteries in Series- Introduction and Voltage

Aug 11, 2021   Pageview:675

If we take a look at things present around us there is one thing that will be very common in most of them and that will be a battery. Batteries have brought a revolution in the way we live. While things were tied up with wires for electrical connection, batteries remove the need to stay in one place when powered as they make everything portably powered.

There are different applications of a battery and each needs batteries of different specifications as well. One of the most common and efficient practices is to use more batteries in different configurations instead of making a whole new battery. There are several examples of circuits that have two batteries and here we will be discussing all their significance.

What if there are two batteries in a circuit?

Whether you take an example of a remote present near you or some toy or even some power backup unit. You will see that there is a scenario where the batteries are connected in series. So, what happens when the batteries are connected in a series circuit? Well, several things are affected when the batteries in a circuit are connected in series orientation. So, here are some of those factors and their effects.

The Total Voltage in the Circuit

When the batteries present in a circuit are connected in a series orientation the first thing that you may note changing is the total voltage of the circuit. Here the voltage of every individual battery is added, and the total voltage equals that sum. It means that the total power that the circuit gets will be more than a single battery.

The Total Current in the Circuit

The next thing that you will note in the circuit is the total current. Now current is the property that does not change when the batteries are connected in series orientation. So, let’s say that the total current of one battery was 1 mAh. So, if there are two or more batteries in the circuit connected in series, the total current through the circuit will remain 1 mAh. There will be no change in the total current of the circuit.

The Performance of the Circuit

The most interesting thing happening here will be the performance of the circuit. As the voltage has increased the performance or the total output of the circuit will get better. In this case, the total time of the circuit can also be increased by using some efficient battery management circuits.

What happens to a circuit when batteries are connected in Series?

As we were discussing the technical terms above about two batteries present in a circuit in series orientation. Let us discuss the physical attributes. When there are two or more batteries present in a circuit the connection method does not remain the same. Similarly, the flow of charges is not the same anymore. There is a lot of stuff that changes here and below is an explanation of things that happen.

The Connection Method

Let’s start with the example of a simple circuit. There is no rocket science going on here as there are two terminals on the circuit and there are two battery terminals as well. You connect the respective terminals, and you are done. However, when there are more than one batteries you need to reconsider some things.

First of all, the batteries are going to be connected in a series orientation, so you need to rethink the way they are interconnected. Secondly, how the final battery connection with the circuit is made, also needs to be redone. In the case of series connection, the opposite terminals of batteries are connected with every next battery.

Moreover, the opposite terminals of the first and last batteries are left disconnected as they are to be connected with the circuit’s terminals.

The Flow of Current

Just like the connection the flow of current is also changed. What happens here is that the electrons start forming through the circuit from one battery and pass every battery in the connection. In this way, the voltage adds up as well.

How do you find the voltage of two batteries?

Finding the voltage of two batteries is not an issue as long as they are not connected. However, as soon as they are connected things get a little different. Not only does the methodology of measuring the voltage change but the protection and caution changes as well. So, if you are looking to find the voltage of two batteries connected in series, you need to start by gathering the following things.

Things You Need

Meter for measuring the voltage

Protective gloves to keep your hands safe from electricity

Protective goggles to keep your eyes safe from sparks

Metal brush to clean the battery terminals

With all of these at hand, you can proceed with checking the voltage of the batteries.

Identification of Terminals

The first thing that you need to do is to identify the terminals of the battery. Here you also need to make sure that the battery terminals are free from all sorts of corrosion so that the best connection is formed, and you get the most accurate reading.

Battery Connection

Connect the batteries in series orientation using a jumper wire. If the batteries are already connected, then you can skip this step.

Taking Readings

Last but not least thing here is to take the reading. Now you do not want one reading. Take at least 5 readings and get their average to get the most appropriate value. In this way, you will have the best voltage of the batteries connected in series. Make sure that you wait for at least 3 to 5 seconds between each reading.

Conclusion

Using batteries in series connection orientation comes with a lot of application and functional benefits. However, there is a lot that people need to know about series orientation. With the guide above, measuring the voltage of batteries in series will no?

longer be an issue for anyone whether they are dealing with large or small batteries.
