How to Clean Battery Cables –Introduction, Methods and Checking

Jan 25, 2021   Pageview:672

In every battery management system, a battery cable is essential as it ensures there is enough power and prevents battery drain. Most of all, the batteries deal with corrosion, affecting their effectiveness, life, and performance. The reactions on both the terminals and battery cable are ended, which calls for cleaning and a worst-case scenario replacement of the wires.

For battery cables with corrosion, get rid of the residues using hot water and baking soda. You may also use commercial-grade battery cleaners, which are well known to neutralize any battery acid. Alternatively, use baking soda to clean out the corrosion on both the terminals and the battery cables.

Always check your battery cables to ensure they are not exposed to corrosion, and if they are, use the methods mentioned above to clean the wires; and if they are torn or in a pretty bad shape, you need to replace them with new cables.

When do you clean corroded battery cables?

Corrosion occurs when there has been a reaction between the hydrogen gas emitted from the sulphuric acid within the battery and the surrounding atmosphere. Once the reaction has taken place, a corrosive environment is created, visible on the battery and later spreads through the cables. The residues are white, making it easier to be spotted.

The best thing to do when you see the corrosive materials is to disconnect the battery's battery cables. Secondly, thoroughly check if the wires have been corroded, dried, if there is any peeled insulation, and lastly, fit for any cracks. If you notice any of the above mentioned in excess, then you should replace the battery cables.

However, suppose the corrosion has not damaged the battery cables. It would be best to clean them immediately because the more the hydrogen reacts with the atmosphere, the more damage to the battery cables. Never wait to clean later since the reaction keeps reacting, which may lead to permanent damage to the wires that may force you to replace them with new cables.

Ensure double-checking the battery terminals and the battery cables since the corrosion may have spread very fast. Any time you see the white residue on your battery terminals or cables, head on to the cleaning process to avoid further damage.

How do you clean corroded battery cables?

Once you have checked the cables' condition, you may notice they are badly damaged to be cleaned, or the corrosion has not damaged the wires. In situations where the wires are in bad condition, the best thing to do is replace them with new cables. If the corrosion has not damaged

line cleaning is the best method to ensure your cables are not damaged and help you buy new threads.

As mentioned initially, various ways and substances are used to clean the corrosive residues on the battery cables. The cleaning majorly entails neutralizing the acidic environment around the battery and the hydrogen that is continuously reacting with the atmosphere. Getting rid of the white residues formed due to the hydrogen reactions is part of the cleaning process.

Several battery cleaning agents are recommended for use example, baking soda is widely used. Other people use Coca-Cola; this agent is not highly recommended because it contains synthetic sugars and phosphoric acid, damaging the engines and surroundings. That leaves us with baking soda as the most suitable commercial cleaning agent.

The process involves; first disconnect the cables from the battery to prevent further corrosion. Secondly, spray the battery cables using the cleaning agent, which is made from a mixture of equal amounts of water and baking soda. If you only have baking soda, you can easily create your cleaning agent by mixing your baking soda with equal water parts.

Thirdly, once you have sprayed the cables, use a toothbrush to clean off the white corrosive residues. You will notice that there will be sizzling on the wires once the cleaning starts, which shows a reaction between the baking soda solution and the corrosive residue. Once the cleaning is done, rinse off the baking soda residues using water and then dry off the cables.

Can you clean battery terminals with baking soda?

Yes, use baking soda on both the terminals and the battery cables. The process on the two is the same. With the terminals, you pour enough baking soda on the two terminals and then run spoonfuls of water on top, and after a few seconds, you will notice the baking soda reacting with the corrosive residue.

The reaction of baking soda with the acidic corrosion is essential because it creates a safe, conducive environment to handle. Ensure you conduct the process on a bathtub, or if you're okay doing it on top of your battery, that's okay. Once the reaction has taken place, use an old toothbrush to scrub off the remaining residues. Lastly, rinse off the terminals using clean water and leave it to dry or use compressed air to blow away the water.

You may use a wire brush instead of a toothbrush. As discussed, the procedures to clean the terminals and the battery cables are the same, and the cleaning agents are used. In many cases, if formed on the terminals and the battery cable ends, corrosion often prevents power flow from the battery through the wires.

baking soda is the widely and most convenient cleaning agent one should use. As discussed earlier, if possible, avoid using Coca-Cola as a cleaning agent because of its effects on your engine and other parts of your vehicle and battery.

Conclusion

Corrosion is terrible on both the battery terminals and cables since it undermines their effectiveness. We have seen ways that one may check and clean the battery cables to enhance their performance. The use of baking soda as a cleaning agent has proved to be effective and the simplest way to clean your battery terminals and cables in case of corrosion. The method of cleaning is straightforward and has been explained above. The use of an old brush or a wire brush can do the trick of getting rid of all the corrosive residues.
