Laptop is a delicate electronics that play a necessity for many of us. After all, we do lots of activities using laptops - from working to watching the latest Netflix shows. Since it has become a part of our lives, it is important for us to take care of its part no matter what, including their batteries.
Thus, we need to check our laptop’s batteries regularly. In this article, we will discuss all about laptop batteries, from its type, how to check it, and the tips to buy it.
There are three different types of batteries that are commonly used for laptops they are:
Nickel Cadmium (NiCad)
Nickel cadmium is the oldest out of all three batteries, and not many use it now. The battery is known for its long-lasting performance and was a powerhouse within the battery world until manufacturers produced its successors. So, don’t be surprised if you discover an “ancient” electronic device of yours is using nickel cadmium.
Although nickel cadmium has a great performance, they are also pretty delicate when it comes to charging. They are known to suffer from Memory Effect if not taken care properly, hence why many people tend to avoid it.
Nickel metal hydride (NiMH)
Nickel metal hydride is the successor of nickel cadmium. If nickel cadmium stores a lot of energy, then nickel metal hydride stores even more. The amount of energy nickel metal hydride is able to store is the reason why manufacturers switched from nickel cadmium.
Unfortunately, nickel metal hydride also suffers from the same “disease” as nickel cadmium, which is the memory effect everybody wants to avoid.
Lithium ion
Lithium ion is the battery that is commonly used for electronics nowadays. Lithium ion has everything its two predecessors don’t have, and one of them is lithium ion’ s weight. Yes, lithium ion is not bulky and is easy to carry, making it the perfect battery for lightweight phones. Another perk lithium ion has is the lack of memory effect. So there is no need to worry about the battery losing its lifespan even if the battery drops to zero!
Thanks to the advance of technology, lithium ion batteries are also well-known for its fast charging option. Now it’s a common thing for a lithium ion to be charged fully in less than one hour.
In the end, lithium ions dominate in many ways. It is light, has no unnecessary side effects, and does not waste time. No wonder manufacturers prefer to use lithium ions than the other two batteries!
If you don’t know the battery model of your laptop, do not worry! There are some ways for you to check the said batteries. Here are some tips to check your laptop's battery model:
Check the battery’s model number
If you can detach your laptop’s battery, then checking the battery type can be done in a snap. Every battery has its type printed out on it, no matter on which side (although it’s usually at the inner side of the battery). You can spot the battery type easily since it is big and bold.
Checking the HSTN number/ spare number/ type number
HP laptops usually print out their battery’s HTSN number or the battery’s type printed out. Just like a model number, it is usually printed at the inner side of the battery, to be specific on the battery’s white label.
Using the laptop model
This tip is applied for those whose batteries cannot be detached easily and the battery’s number happened to be at the inner side of the battery. You can use the laptop model to search for the battery type. First, look at the laptop model at the back of the laptop (the side where you would place the laptop on the desk). Once you’ve found the laptop model, search it up on the internet. You will be able to find the battery type on the database provided on the internet.
If the information is not provided at the back, search the laptop model at the frame or on the keyboard.
Using the laptop model in DOS mode (only for advanced users)
If you still can’t find the laptop model and battery type, then you have no choice. Either you bring it to the service center or find out in DOS mode (only for advanced users!)
Once you’re retired your laptop in DOS mode, locate the “Information” or “About” section in order to find the laptop model. There are some laptops who also display the laptop type at the beginning too, at the welcome screen.
After you’ve found the laptop model, return the laptop back to its normal or friendly version.
Searching for laptop model for HP laptops
Another option to check your laptop model is by using HP Support Assistant. All you need to do is search for HP Support Assistant in Windows, and click on it. It will show everything, from the laptop model, product name, laptop’s serial number, and many more.
As stated before, the best way to find the battery is by searching for the laptop model first. Once you know the laptop model, all you need to do is go to HP Parts Store and buy the genuine parts. You can do so by going to “Buy certified HP genuine replacement parts” section, select your region, type the information of your laptop, then search it. When you’ve found the battery, buy it.
Buying a battery for a laptop is not hard. However, it should be noted that we need to know the information of the laptop too, from its serial number, type, and many more. Once you’ve known all the information, you will definitely be able to find the right battery for your laptop. So don’t be scared and buy the best battery for your laptop now!
