Manganese Battery: Comparison, Stocks and Demand

Jun 17, 2021   Pageview:734

Manganese battery might be an unfamiliar term for many people, even those who are accustomed at using batteries. Don’t worry, because they are indeed not talked about often. Despite the lack of buzz about manganese batteries, they possess amazing traits no other kind of battery has. What are those traits, and what makes manganese battery special.

Manganese Battery vs Alkaline

In order to understand how special manganese batteries are, let’s compare them with alkaline batteries since alkaline is the most commonly-used battery by people.

Alkaline Batteries

Alkaline is the most preferable battery by many people not without reason. Alkaline batteries are slimmer compared to the bulk non-alkaline batteries, and they also contain chemicals that allow them to last for a long time. Of course, it’s not a surprise that they can store a lot of power despite their small size.

Moreover, alkaline batteries are cheaper compared to other batteries. They are inexpensive, and yet they are also safer compared to other batteries since they do not have harmful chemicals.

However, this does not stop the fact that leakage can also happen to Alkaline batteries. Although their chemicals are not harmful to us, it does not mean that they are not harmful to the environment. There needs to be better way to store energy in a more environment-friendly ways.

This is where the manganese battery comes into play.

Manganese Battery

When we are talking about manganese battery, we are not talking about the alkaline manganese battery where the manganese component is not dominant. We are talking about batteries whose components are dominantly made of manganese.

In December 2020, Tesla announced a breakthrough with manganese. They claimed that they’ve made cells using manganese, and those cells can store energy five times more than their normal batteries. The component also makes the battery more powerful, and it increases the percentage of the range by 15%.

People who are not aware of the benefits of manganese might not realize how revolutionary this is. Manganese is considered as the future component that gives us an alternative for clean energy. This is because of the fact that manganese does not contaminate the earth. So when a manganese battery is no longer used, it will not harm the environment when they are disposed (unless their parts are reused again).

It should also be noted that the battery Tesla successfully made in their lab has the combination of manganese and nickel. If the combination of these two components are successful even more in the future, it will increase the chance of elimination of cobalt.

Cobalt is dangerous for humans, as it can harm many vital parts of the body (eyes, lungs, heart, and skin). To make it even worse, cobalt mining is mostly done by people (often children), and there have been issues where cobalt mining places have questionable policies that are not in accordance with human rights.

Due to the harm cobalt possesses, many have been searching for ways to eliminate cobalt completely from the world of batteries. If manganese can be used widely and efficiently, the complete elimination of cobalt might be closer than we’ve thought.

Manganese Battery Stocks

Manganese’s stock price has suffered before due to the oversupply in 2019 and 2020. Globally, manganese has a worth of  US$12.26 billion. However, due to the demand of manganese thanks to its recent discovery in the automotive industry, researchers believe that the price would soar to US$21.23 billion by 2027. It makes sense how the price would increase to such an amount. Although it will be demanded a lot, we still need to consider market volatility.

There were around 19 million metric tons of manganese produced in 2019, and the production in 2020 slightly increased more. However, because of the new discovery, its production in Australia, China, South Africa, and Gabon are expected to increase as well.

It’s a bit hard for those who want to invest in manganese, as most manganese production companies are listed privately. So far the company that focuses on manganese and actually did research on the element is Manganese X, and they are being vocal about it too. It seems that Manganese X has been heading toward a more positive direction, seeing how they recently appointed a new Director and had shareholder approval of a plan with Graphano in April 2021.

Manganese Battery Demand

For those who are still unsure whether manganese will thrive, worry not. Ever since everybody finds out how manganese can be our solution for clean energy, many companies have demand for even more manganese. As a matter of fact, the annual rate of manganese is expected to increase by 23% from the end of 2020 until 2027. The demand will most likely be from the automatic section, but it won’t be surprising if the mobile phone section would start demanding for it too.

We should also note the statement from Manganese X. Manganese C has stated that they aim to bring cobalt to the battery industry. It’s an ambitious plan indeed, but it’s something they can definitely achieve especially with the latest discovery regarding manganese. And so far, they’ve been showing positive progress regarding everything.

Conclusion

Manganese might have been forgotten, but the recent discovery regarding the battery made it enter the spotlight again. It makes sense, since people are expecting for a more environmentally-friendly change in the battery world, and it seems that manganese is able to fulfill that role. Not only manganese is safe for earth, it can also save more energy and bring about the elimination of cobalt.

For those who want to invest in manganese, do not hesitate to do so. Its impact in the future will be significant, and the demand for manganese will increase every year. It seems that manganese will bring a positive impact for our world, both within the industry and for earth. The result will not be seen now but later in the future, possibly around 2027 or maybe a few years after it.
