How to Recharge AAA Batteries in Freezer

For us to delve into the world of battery-recharging, let’s talk about AAA batteries and get to know it better.

What are AAA batteries?

AAA batteries are dry single-cell batteries that are used on smaller devices. Makes sense, considering how it has 10.5 mm diameter and 44.5 mm length. 

However, AAA batteries stand out because they offer more energy and sometimes can be used for devices that used to need AA batteries. Yes, devices that need the same voltage but higher current to draw now use AAA batteries instead of AA batteries. Again, this makes sense, considering how now there are lots of upgraded devices that are smaller in size, making it inefficient to use AAA batteries for those devices.

There are many types of AAA batteries, but these two are the most common ones:

Alkaline AAA Batteries

Alkaline AAA batteries can be seen everywhere since it’s extremely common. It’s relatively cheap in price. However, it does its job as a battery perfectly. It’s typical mAh is 850-1200, and it has a voltage of 1.5V. 

It should be noted that the battery is mostly not rechargeable, so you will need to buy them for replacements. However, there are some rechargeable ones; you can see it on their packaging if it’s rechargeable or not.

Nickel Oxy-Hydroxide AAA Batteries

Nickel Oxy-Hydroxide AAA batteries, or NiOOH batteries, is pretty much an alkaline battery that’s added with another element. The other element is  nickel oxyhydroxide. This allows the battery to increase its maximum voltage to 1.7V. Due to its high maximum voltage. NiOOH batteries are commonly used for devices that drain things quickly such as cameras. 

Beside the maximum voltage, NiOOH batteries have similar capacity with that of alkaline batteries’. NiOOH batteries are also non-rechargeable, so you’ll have to get plenty of them for backups. 

How do you recharge AAA batteries in the freezer?

Since this article is about how to recharge batteries in freezer, we will give the freezer steps first. Here is what you should do to charge batteries in the freezer:

1.Take out the battery from the device.

2.Put it into a plastic bag.

3.Place the battery inside the freezer.

4.Let it sit in the fridge for 12 hours.

5.Take out the battery after 12 hours, and let it stay outside until it’s back at room temperature.

6.Do not use the battery unless it’s back to room temperature.

When you freeze a battery, the battery’s energy does increase again. However, it should be noted that the amount increased is only 5%, making it a small amount compared to the original energy of the battery. So, you should only freeze a battery when you are in urgent need. If you have time, purchase a new AAA battery instead.

How can you make your battery work again?

Beside freezing the battery, there are other ways to make the battery work again. Here are some of those ways:

Lemon Juice

Yes, lemon juice can do magic on alkaline AAA batteries you haven’t used in a while. It has properties that can help the electrons to flow again, making it easy for the battery to gain its energy (at least 85% of its energy back).

To use lemon juice, all you need to do is to turn down the AAA battery in lemon juice for one hour. After that, let it dry. The battery is ready to use!

Metal BBQ Clamp

Believe it or not, but you can actually use a metal barbeque clamp to save a dead AAA battery. All you need is a clean and dry metal BBQ clamp, the dead battery, and a charged battery of the same kind as the dead battery.

The steps are simple. First, make sure the flat sides of both batteries meet each other. After they do, put the two batteries (with the same position) between the clamp and press them together. You must hold the negative parts together too to make sure that they are in contact. Do this for thirty seconds to one minute.

After one minute, release  the batteries. The dead battery should gain a little amount of energy that can be used for emergency situations.

Warm Them Up

If you have no tools mentioned above, the simplest way is to warm the batteries. It is common knowledge that warming the battery can revive the battery for one last time, making it usable for another time even after it’s dead. 

To warm the battery, you can put it between your palms and rub it as hard as you can, as if you’re warming yourself. If not, you can slip it into your clothes and let it stay in contact with your skin for ten minutes.
