Laptops have become a very important tool in our day to day work and studies. They are highly preferred because of their portability, light design and efficiency. Although they are smaller compared to desktops, laptops can carry out so many tasks when you are away from home or office. According to Statista, 218 million laptops were shipped across the world in 2020. This number is also expected to increase in the following years.
As you can see, there is massive adoption of laptops. The number of desktops shipped across the world in 2020 stood at 79 million. This is a clear indication that laptops are the most used form of computers in the world. However, it's common to see people running into all sorts of problems with these devices. Because they run on batteries, charging issues are the most prevalent. I.e. laptop doesn't power on and the battery won't charge either.
This article will look at all the possible causes and how you can fix these issues.
If your laptop is plugged in and not charging, then it could be due to any of the following five issues.
1. Faulty Power Supply
If there is a faulty power supply, then your laptop will not charge. In addition, this issue can cause more damage if not fixed immediately. The faulty power supply can cause a short circuit to the major components. This issue can be on the charger or the power supply.
2. Dead Battery
If there is no issue with the power cord, then the next possible cause might be the battery. A dead battery cannot charge nor start your laptop. Batteries that are not well maintained can become dead even before reaching its lifespan. A laptop's battery can cause the laptop not to start. Although most of the laptops can start without a battery others
3. Motherboard
A motherboard is like the heart of every electronic device. So if your laptop is not starting and yet it is connected to the power supply, then there is a high chance the motherboard is dead. All the major components such as the rams, hard-disk, and processors are connected to the motherboard
4. Video Card
Sometimes the video card can cause the laptop to misbehave. If you have a faulty or missing video card, then the laptop will not start.
5. RAM
The RAM provides a temporary memory for the laptop to load its programs. If the ram is dead or missing, then the laptop will not start.
6. Charger not Strong Enough
If you are not using the right charger, then the battery will not charge. Laptops come with specific chargers designed to charge at a given rate and power. Using a less powerful charger will not provide enough charging power to the battery. Besides, when you use a very powerful charger, it might destroy your battery and laptop completely. Always use the right charger to avoid such accidents.
1.Check the battery status.
Check if the battery is connected properly then put it back in the charger again. Sometimes the battery might be lost hence preventing it from charging.
2.Replace the battery.
If the battery is dead, then you need to replace it for the laptop to start charging again. Make sure to buy the exact model or otherwise it won't be compatible.
3.Make sure that you are using the right port.
If you are using a USB-C charger, make sure that you have connected the charger in the right port. Sometimes it's easy to confuse and insert the charger in the wrong hole.
4.Use another charger.
A faulty charger will not charge your laptop battery. That is why you need to replace it with another one. Make sure that you get a charger with the same voltage.
5.Replace the power supply.
Make sure that your power supply, i.e. the socket, is providing power.
6.Change the motherboard.
If all the above issues have been fixed and the battery is still not charging then replacing the motherboard will help.
The battery is a crucial part of the laptop. This is because it makes the laptop portable. You can travel and use it anywhere as long as you have a charged battery. But sometimes the battery night stop working hence causing a lot of inconveniences. If this ever happens then, you should try fixing the battery before buying a new one.
If the battery has been stored for a long time without charge, then try putting it on the charger for a long period. This will help to revive the cells and get the battery back to working ways again.
Clean the plates. If the plates of the battery or laptop contain some rust, then the battery will not charge. You can fix this problem easily by cleaning the rust off.
Repair the dead battery: After confirming that the battery is completely dead, then you can fix it by replacing the cells. But you need to be careful because it is a dangerous process if messed up. Buy some new 18650 cells or remove them from an old laptop battery. Remove the cells without damaging the cover. Use the multi-meter to measure your voltage. Then connect the cells in a series connection. Insert this circuit back to the casing and connect to the terminals using some wires. You can now check the battery before sealing the casing completely.
Laptops are very important, especially when it comes to working remotely. They are powered by powerful batteries which allow them to perform heavy tasks. But sometimes batteries might become faulty and cause the laptop not to start. If you ever find yourself in that situation, then you should not panic as it can be fixed by changing the cells. However, if you do not have the skills, then you can buy another battery for replacement. You can also use a laptop without a battery, but you will not be able to work remotely.
