Two 12 Volt Batteries to Make 12 Volts- Usage, RV and Charging

Mar 25, 2021   Pageview:727

Batteries connect in series several cells to get the required operating voltage. Each cell derives the total terminal voltage. Most battery chemistries determine the series and parallel connection. However, using the same type of battery featuring equal capacity (Ah) and voltage is a must. You need not mix different sizes and makes. It is critical to ensure series configuration, if not including a weaker cell may result in imbalance.

Can you use two 12 volt lithium batteries to make 12 volts?

Lithium batteries use the power supply, but ensure the cells are in a series. They can be recharged using a single charger if they have the same voltage output as nominal charging.

To use two 12 volt lithium batteries, you may connect to the positive terminal the load of the battery. You may do it as:

Connect the battery negative terminal of 1 to the battery 2 positive terminal.

Thus, pairing 12-volt lithium batteries parallel connected to a single charge of 12-volt is possible. It is not required for lower current chargers. However, when it is reaching 10 amp and more, the difference in the voltage is significant.

Note: If the batteries are in parallel connection, using one charger is enough. There is no need to connect to each battery a charger.

How do you hook up two 12 volt lithium batteries in an RV?

Joining or hooking up two batteries means it increases the amps or voltage and is useful if you need more power.

RV batteries in series

Joining in series the RV batteries allows keeping the same amperage and adds extra voltage. For instance, joining two RV batteries of the same volt in series gives a total of both, but the amps do not change.

The connection of RV batteries of 12 volts is done using a jumper wire. One battery’s negative terminal is connected to the other battery's positive terminal.  Another set of cables link the remaining positive and negative terminal to the device you connect the batteries to. Always, ensure the connected batteries have the same amp rating and voltage.

RV batteries in parallel

An RV battery parallel bank increases the current, keeping the voltage the same. In case you join two RV batteries in parallel, for instance, two 12-volt batteries give you 12 volts, but the amps increase.

Parallel connections are to connect two positive terminals to two negative terminals. Thus, it creates a positive-positive and a negative-negative. These batteries are connected to the application and they will get used equally and drain.

A series-parallel bank increases voltage and amps. A minimum of four batteries is required to enjoy this increase. However, you must track the connection.  Any two sets of batteries with parallel connections can be together joined to form a series power bank.

To install an RV battery, turn off the objects drawing power from the battery, even a minor appliance. Note the location of the current battery; disconnect first the negative cables and then the positive. Clean the terminals of the new battery and the cables. Inset the battery and ensure to reattach the cables. Now install some small hardware accompanying the battery, and give a test run.

How do you charge 12-volt lithium batteries in parallel

Connecting batteries in parallel increase only the amp-hour capacity.  The concept is that with parallel connection, the amp-hour ratings get added with the batteries, but the voltage stays the same.

To keep 12-volt batteries parallel, it is a need for four 2000 mAh, 1.2 volts, and wired parallel to provide 8000 mAh (i.e. 2000 mAh x 4).

Connecting batteries with different voltages positioning the batteries in parallel is a NO. It should be strictly avoided. The higher voltage battery will try to charge the lower voltage battery and create in the circuit a balance. Keeping the lower and higher voltage battery will result in leaking, overheating, or bulging and the voltage drains rapidly. More importantly, is that with a larger voltage difference, the chances of explosion or fire are greater.

People connecting different voltages batteries accidentally in parallel or mixing brands with labeled same voltage batteries also experience problems. It is because the processes of manufacturing are not the same. The battery's exact voltages vary with different producers slightly. It may be that a battery of 1.5 volts from one brand may be 1.6 volts and some other brands may give 1.55 volts. When these varying brands are connected in parallel, the volts also vary and you may experience other issues, even if it does not result in fireworks.

If you try to connect in parallel, the rechargeable batteries and find one is discharged while the others stay charged, the batteries that are charged attempt to charge the discharged battery. Thus, it shows no resistance to the slow process of charging, resulting in overheat as it drains rapidly. The discharged battery may overheat while it is charging above its capability.

If you mix different age batteries, the older batteries will have a lower voltage. It is because over time, all batteries self-discharge. Even rechargeable batteries do not recharge as the new ones to the same level.

To charge 12V lithium batteries in series you must connect across the appropriate voltage charger at one end with the positive terminal series and the other end, it should be the negative terminal. However, the charge time is the same as a single battery charging.

Technically, 12V lithium batteries in parallel require at least one caveat. Having the same terminal voltages is preferred, though no two batteries ever have the same voltages. Thus, even for two hand-wired batteries, the higher voltage will end charging the lower voltage battery.

Four 12 volt batteries of 100 Ah can be in parallel. It will give you 12 volts and 400 Ah. The series battery wiring: When you consider?two 12 volt car batteries in series, it will add the voltage and give total voltage output as (24 volts), keeping the same current.
