Battery Rejuvenators – Introduction and Time

Most gadgets that you have come across in today's world operate using batteries. Batteries serve us a lot in our daily lives. We mostly use them in automobiles, watches, home power backup systems, flashlights, and video game controllers. Lead-acid batteries have surpassed all other battery types in recent times due to their high performance, average life span, and reliability.

The beauty of lead-acid batteries is that you can recondition them after they reach their estimated lifespan of 5 years. When batteries reach their estimated lifespan, they usually die or start misbehaving, making one dispose of them off. To recondition a battery, you will need to use a battery rejuvenator. In this article, we will discuss battery rejuvenators and everything you need to know about rejuvenating a battery.

Can you disulfate a battery?

When you store your batteries for an extended period and leave them uncharged, they become sulfated. When you overcharge your battery continuously, this will also happen. This means lead sulfur deposits will form and harden ion the lead plates within the battery. Such an effect will cause the battery to not charge to its original capacity, causing battery failure. Sulfation of a batter can be a huge issue as it will impede the chemical to electrical conversion of the battery hence impacting battery performance. Apart from longer charging times, a sulfated battery will face the following challenges;

Experience excessive heat build-up.

You will get excessive heat build-up.

The battery will have dramatically shorter battery life.

Short running times between charges may eventually lead to complete battery failure.

Sometimes, the damage caused by battery sulfation can easily be reversed and is preventable. For it to fully charge and operate, you will need to disulfate the battery using a rejuvenator. So, to answer your question, yes, you can disulfate your battery. You first need to know which type of sulfation you are dealing with. Secondly, you will need to know whether it is reversible or not by checking on the voltage discharge curve.

Sulfation can be either reversible or permanent. . Reversible sulfation can be easily corrected. You will need to find out if your fully charged battery will hold a stable voltage profile on discharge. If it does, you will need to apply an overcharge to a fully charged battery in a current regulated form of about 200 mA. It is advisable to seek a professional's help or someone with experience working with lead batteries to do the reconditioning.

Most times, permanent sulfation will occur when your battery has been in an undercharged state for a long period. Sometimes the effects may be reversible, but it may not be possible to restore it sometimes.

How long does it take to disulfate a battery?

You can disulfate your battery using an outside source as you cannot charge the battery as you will have a regular battery by charging your battery at a low current of about 5 to 10 amps. You will be able to know the sulfate is breaking when the gravity of the electrolyte increases. All you will need to do is keep checking on the battery's temperature to avoid it overheating. If it overheats, disconnects the battery and allows it to cool first and continue the process until it is fully charged. The amount of time this will take will depend on how hard your battery sulfation occurred.

Generally, you will need a lot more time to charge a sulfated battery. This is due to the charging speed of a sulfated battery is less as compared to regular batteries. Most times, it might take about 24 to 36 hours to fully charge a sulfated battery. As stated above, all this will depend on the type and extent of sulphation you are dealing with. After reconditioning your battery, you will need to keep a voltage of more than 12.4 volts. The perfect voltage for a reconditioned battery after being charged is estimated to be at 12.6 volts. So, when you measure your battery after fully charging it, it should give this voltage amount.

The size of the battery can also determine how long it will take you to disulfate it. A bigger battery may take you from 48 hours to even weeks to complete the Di sulfation process. For such an extended time, you will also need a trickle charger that will reduce the amount of lead sulfur.

What is a battery reconditioner?

The process of a battery discharging and recharging while supplying energy to any device or vehicle cause sulfation to occur. The sulfation chemical reaction will eventually lead to a build-up of sulfate crystals on the plates of your battery. More sulfate deposits will lead to less efficiency, longer charging times, lower charge capacity, and generally low battery performance. A battery reconditioner is a device used to solve this problem by bringing back the full charge capacity and standard electrolyte level. The device brings back the battery's healthy life, hence enabling it to charge and discharge at the expected time frame and rate.

The reconditioning process will clean the sulfates crystal from battery plates, enabling the battery to function better.

Let's look at some of the benefits you will expect when you recondition your battery.

Increased lifespan for your battery.

Save you from experiencing dead batteries in the middle of nowhere.

Reduction of costs.

It is great for the environment's safety as the lesser lead acid solution will be disposed into the surrounding.

Improve battery performance

Conclusion

You can easily prevent battery sulfation from occurring by always performing regular battery maintenance. You can also make sure you follow the best practices when it comes to charging your battery. Ensure you do not store your uncharged battery for longer periods as it is the most common cause of sulfation.

In case you fail to adhere to this, you can easily solve your sulfated battery issues. Batteries are usually expensive, and throwing them with sulfate crystals can be more costly, especially when they have not exceeded their expected lifespan. You can easily rejuvenate or recondition these batteries and save on these costs.
