Besides the fact that an overheating battery is not a good sign, users naturally don’t like it when their batteries are in such a state. Batteries can overheat for several reasons. But whatever the case, it is best you investigate why your battery is becoming hot, and try proffering a lasting solution to it if there is one.
On this post, we will be looking at the various causes and effects of an overheating battery. We will also be critically studying how safe it is to use a battery that is in such an overheating state. You would also learn what you are supposed to do with such batteries.
Just like we established initially, a lot of things can be responsible for an overheating battery. Some of those factors can be self-inflicting whereas the others could be a sign of a battery that is going bad. If your battery starts to become hotter than usual, you can consider any of the following:
Wrongly Inserted – when you slot a battery into its box or casing, you need to be sure you are placing it correctly. That is because if it is not positioned the right way, the battery could start to heat up. So you need to be doubly sure you are placing it appropriately.
Deformed Terminal – a bad terminal can also result in overheating of a battery. Not too many people are aware of this factor. You need to ensure the negative and positive terminals are always in good shape. Get rid of any impurities that could deform the battery terminals in the process.
External Short-Circuit – if a battery is short-circuited for a period of time, it could start to heat up. Let’s say you kept the battery inside a drawer or somewhere in your house, and there is a metallic strip that is making contact with both terminals without your knowledge. This is referred to as a Short-Circuit. Short-circuiting a battery can cause the battery to start dissipating more heat than usual.
Higher Electrical load – every battery is designed to carry a particular amount of electrical load. When you use your battery within that stipulated load requirements, you don’t have anything to worry about. However, if this limit is exceeded by using the battery with too much load, then you have only yourself to blame. The battery will be overheated in the process. Always ensure you are using a battery in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Not showing any form of concern for an overheating battery is an easy and timely way to deteriorate the functionality of a battery. You need to pay extra attention to your overheating battery because of how unfavourable it is.
Heat appears to erode battery performance faster. When a battery starts to overheat, it is made to work much harder than it would have normally. Its charging and discharging processes will require more energy because the battery will be working to overcome the heat dissipated.
At the onset, the battery is going to struggle to supply power and do any other thing. As the situation persists, the battery will be forced to exhibit other negative, unpleasant features. Some of these negative features include creating bubbles, bulging, or even create sparks that could graduate to flames.
You need to keep a closer look at such batteries because it can result to something more damaging than you can imagine. For instance, are you aware that an overheating battery can eventually explode? Yes, that is the real reason behind many explosions today that are related to battery powered devices. Not only that, it has also been concluded that in many occasions, the overheating battery ends up damaging the host device itself.
And when the extreme heat is allowed to go on for an extended period, it begins to form corrosive elements around the battery terminals. Finally, that particular battery will end up becoming useless to you because its lifespan will be cut short by those corrosive impurities.
Obviously, there is nothing to gain from a battery that is overheating. It is more like a disaster waiting to happen. If you are having any such batteries, you need to do something quick about the battery.
Having learned about the problems an overheating battery could cause you, this is the part where you understand what you should do about such batteries. You certainly cannot fold your arms and do nothing about it. So what do you do with such a battery?
To address the problem of an overheating battery, you can revisit the first section in this post. First start by identifying the cause of the overheating. If it is due to too much electrical load, then of course, you know that the simple solution is to reduce the size of electrical load that the battery powers. Ensure the electrical load is slightly lower than what has been stipulated.
