A deep cycle battery is a form of energy storage battery designed to sustain power over a long span of time. You all have heard about the benefits of a deep-discharge battery. It has fantastic lifespan with minimal maintenance and upkeep. Even if you maintain these batteries a little bit, their lifespan expands significantly, and they result in a monetary saving in the long run.
If you are a regular battery consumer, it’ll be easier for you to understand the differences between the various types of batteries and their uses as per your needs. Deep cycle battery is one of the huge varieties of batteries available in the market has two broad categories: Flooded Deep Discharge Battery and Valve regulated lead-acid battery.
One of the most important things that a consumer has to check while purchasing a battery is the lifespan of the battery. Of course, understanding the types, features, and functions of various kinds of batteries is also crucial in order to be both money and energy-efficient. How long a battery can last is important not only from a usage perspective but also to provide the user with an idea of the maintenance cycle so that they can increase the lifespan even more.
The lifespan of deep cycle batteries depends a lot on usage, maintenance, and charging. Even factors like temperature and environment affect the lifespan considerably. In comparison to a normal person, a regular battery user might have a deep and wide knowledge of the main differences in various batteries. In order to buy an effective and right battery that has a good life span and which suits all your needs, you must know the various types of batteries.
Flooded Lead Acid Battery:
Flooded lead-acid deep cycle batteries have the longest lifespans, which can last anywhere from 4-8 years. It can go even more with a little bit of maintenance. These batteries are highly popular when it comes to conventional deep cycle batteries. This battery is quite the same as the standard lead-acid battery of a car. Flooded lead-acid batteries are also known as “wet cells.”
This battery is known to be the oldest yet usable rechargeable battery, which is used for various applications such as in automotive industries and marine use. The flooded lead-acid batteries require monitoring and maintenance on a regular basis because these batteries have a liquid in a container.
When it comes to the advantages of flooded lead-acid batteries, you will be surprised to know that these batteries are the cheapest in price. The design of this battery is simple, and it is easy to fix all the damages. These batteries have a high surge of current as well, which makes them perfect for various applications.
Sealed or Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery:
Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years, depending upon the manufacturing process. These batteries are termed as sealed because they do not have any watering requirements. There is no high maintenance needed in this battery as they are not required to be monitored regularly; however, it is recommended that you check these deep cycle batteries once in a while. These batteries have a “recombinant feature”; in this, hydrogen and oxygen are combined in the battery. There are different types of Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries, such as AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery and Gel battery.
Hence, most of the deep cycle batteries have an average life span of up to six years. It all depends upon the charging and proper care. You need to ensure here that your battery does not get damaged due to your charging routine.
You can always consider reviving your present deep cycle battery instead of buying a new one immediately. It proves to be a practical and economical approach. A deep cycle battery is fixable, and you can use it for more years. In case if your deep cycle batteries are giving signals like they are not able to remain charged or they are not able to charge, then you can revive the battery by following the mentioned steps:
Step 1:
Gather Epsom salt, distilled water, and baking soda
Step 2:
Perform a reading of your current battery’s charge. You can use a tester also; with this, you will get to know how weak your battery is.
Step 3:
Ensure that the working space is clean. Start removing all the grease, debris, and dirt from the battery with the help of a cloth or tissue paper. With the aging of a battery, corrosion naturally takes place; therefore, make sure that you have put on your mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Clean the corroded area using distilled water and baking soda.
Step 4:
Twist and lose the battery caps, remove the acid from the battery. Ensure complete safety during this process. Carefully dispose of the battery’s acid.
Step 5:
Combine baking soda and distilled water in 10 ounces and 1 gallon, respectively. Mix baking soda to this in small portions so as to make sure that it gets dissolves completely.
Step 6:
With a funnel, start pouring this liquid into each cell of the battery. Put the caps back and shake the battery for around 40 seconds. After this, dump this liquid. Now mix 1 gallon of distilled water and 15 ounces of Epsom salt. Now pour this solution into each cell of the battery.
Step 7:
With a battery charger, slowly charge the battery for around 24 hours. You can remain the caps open as there might be some liquid overflowing.
After 24 hours, check the reading of the battery, you can expect an improvement. For further improvement, you can repeat this process.
Step 8:
With a multi-meter, do a reading, and you can expect much better readings now.
Step 9
Drain the battery to its fullest and charge it again. Drain until the battery reaches 10 V.
Step 10:
Charge your battery to its fullest, and you will have a revived battery back.
If you are utilizing a deep cycle battery to power an appliance, then you must monitor the charge regularly. Depending on the manufacturer, deep cycle batteries get discharged around 45 to 75% of their capacity. These batteries should be put to charge when they show a 50% charge. Remember, do not let them get reduced to 20%; otherwise, it can impact the battery’s life span.
Well, that’s all for the deep cycle batteries. Do check the manufacturer while purchasing these batteries. With proper maintenance and charge, you can use them over a long period of time without facing any challenges.
