Batteries are one of the essential sources of power in the world today. They power most of our electrical devices, and that is what makes them a must-have.
However, batteries are not built to last forever. Even the battery that powers your laptop or the one that starts your car will sooner or later require changing.
Keeping an eye on your battery’s life is crucial. You already know that it will die at some point and may require replacement, but you don’t want to be caught unawares.
We understand that replacing a battery can feel a little pinchy on the pocket. Luckily, just because it’s dead does not always mean you will have to buy a new one.
In this guide, we will be looking at how to check battery wear and when to get a new one.
How do batteries die?
Let’s use laptop batteries, for instance. These are devices that use lithium-ion batteries. The general rule is that these batteries tend to lose their charging capabilities. And this is what happens to all rechargeable batteries.
At this point, a full charge that was once held at 100% comes down to, say, 30% after many charging cycles. You will experience reduced efficiency with your laptop.
Another common battery type you will experience such issues with is car batteries. These wet batteries have electrons submerged in battery water and acid as the electrolyte.
A chemical reaction causes power to flow, starting your car or running its electrical system, some energy is lost. In due cause, you will not be able to use the battery. It will not start your car, and that should mean replacing it.
Battery wear happens because the batteries are equipped to handle only a certain number of charges recycles. That means there is a limited number of times your battery goes from 0% to 100%.
Even if you don’t use the battery, Li-ion batteries have a certain shelf-life.
In a nutshell, batteries will always wear, whether in use or not. You cannot avoid charging them or increase the charge cycle. You can only check the battery health instead.
When you know how much power the battery can still hold, you understand how much abuse it can endure. This also means you will know how to best use the batteries.
Battery Wear Level Test
You can always tell when your battery has an issue. The battery would serve you for a whole day or even several days when it was still new. As time goes by, you will notice it draining much faster.
Now, this does not always mean the battery has an issue. It could be that you have installed power-hungry applications on your device. In this case, removing the apps will give you more battery performance.
However, if the battery is indeed worn, even resetting your phone or laptop will not help much. It would be best to run a battery wear level test.
The steps to take depends on the type of battery in use. Those who use a Macbook find it much easier to test their battery wear level than any other device.
Every battery and device come with specific instructions on how to check these factors. For Windows:
Click on the start menu and search for “PowerShell and then type?powercfg/batteryreport.?Press “Enter,” and it will generate a report with information about your battery.
You can then access the report by searching in your account’s directory using your name: C:\users[yourname].
These instructions generate a report with a lot of information about your laptop. This is where you can find information about its health too. The report is an HTML file. Double-click to get the contents.
For older batteries, you can use the Battery Report. This lets you discover your battery more.
Press Windows Key+X. This opens the Win + X Menu.
Click on Command Prompt (Admin). This opens the administrator command, on which you can run the report.
Once the command is open, use type in powercfg/battery report and click enter.
Like the other method above, this action will generate a wide range of information about your machine. You can then open and check the battery report.
Battery Wear Level When to Replace
Battery wear can be frustrating. First, it will no longer serve you as you would expect. And second, you may not have the money to get another battery.
Nevertheless, there are several ways to tell when it’s time to get a new battery. Consider the following.
You notice reduced performance. If you think your battery is worn out, it probably is. You can tell this from how it behaves compared to its initial performance,
Windows alert you. Windows do not update users on the battery capacity. The first clue will be when you notice and change in the performance of your computer. As you continue using, it only gets weaker and weaker. Later, the battery gets too low. It cannot hold enough capacity. That is when Windows alerts you. Whenever you start the laptop, it will inform you that “you should consider replacing your battery.” It’s telling you the battery can no longer hold enough power to drive your machine for a recommended minimum time.
Battery Wear Level Check
Can you check the battery wear level on your android device? Sure. There are several ways to do this, mostly through applications and tools.
?Using Dial Codes. Most smartphones today allow users to check battery health via hidden menus. For instance, OnePlus users check this using the diagnostic tool. You can also use the most common code *#*#4636#*#*. Click on the “Battery Information” menu, and you will see your battery status.
?Using third-party applications. AccuBattery is the most popular app you can use to get an estimate of your battery’s health. Simply install it on the device and then leave it for several days. Add this app to the “do not optimize list” to keep it running. The app will start indicating battery health after every charge cycle.
Keep an eye on your battery to avoid unnecessary shutdowns. A healthy device battery means more enjoyment. We hope this article has been helpful.
