Battery is a valuable part of every car. Without the battery, the car would not be able to start itself, losing its main function as a transportation device. For this reason, it is important for us to make sure that the batteries of our cars can work properly, no matter what the condition is.
Thankfully, car manufacturers know our needs and create some terms to show whether the car can be used in certain environments or not. One of those terms is Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). In this article, we will talk about CCA; what it means, the range, the value, everything.
The first thing we will talk about is the concept of battery cold cranking amps. What is it exactly?
Although not many know, not all batteries can crack up in any weather. Most batteries can work during warm temperatures, but the same cannot be said when it comes to cold temperature. For this reason, car manufacturers create a special system that allows some car batteries usable even during cold temperatures.
Of course, each car has a different ability to crack up the engine during cold temperatures. Some cars have better performance compared to others’. To know the ability of each car, the industry decided to create Cold Cranking Amps or (CCA).
CCA is the rating that is used to measure the car’s ability to crack up on cold weathers. The higher the CCA, the higher the car’s ability to be used during freezing temperatures.
So, a car battery’s quality does not depend on the CCA. it depends on the weather you live in. If you live in an area with normal weather, then there is no need for you to be concerned about the car’s CCA. However, if you live in a cold weather, then it is better to have more cold cranking amps, as it prevents the chance for the car to be dead in the middle of a drive.
Everything depends on you and the weather of the area where you will use the car. Do you need CCA or not?
If you live in cold weather and need a car with a high number of cold cranking amps, don’t worry, as we have the list for you. Here are some batteries with good amount of CCA:
1. Odyssey 31-PC2150S AGM
Odyssey 31 has one of the highest numbers of CCA on their batteries. Their CCA amount is at least 2150A, enough to start a semi-truck. You will get a three and half hour capacity for the CCA.
The battery is also big and bulky but not without reason. The battery’s capacity is 100Ah, making it able to give energy to the car for 205 minutes nonstop. Even if the battery needs recharge, there is no need to worry for time. After all, you can fully charge it within 4 to 6 hours.
2. NorthStar NSB-AGM31 AGM
What makes NorthStar’s battery stand out the most is its amount of CCA, which is 1150A. The amount of CCA will make it possible for the car to start up immediately no matter what kind of weather it is. The manufacturer is extremely confident with NorthStar, they stated that the battery can work even when the temperature is as low as -40 degree celsius or 65 degree celsius.
If you’re worried about spillage, it’s time to let go of the worry. The battery has a sealed design that prevents leakage, so you can put the battery in any position you want. It will be hard to elevate it though, as the battery is extremely big and bulky.
3. Delphi BU9078DT MaxStart AGM
If you need a decent amount of CCA, you can opt for Delphi’s battery. It has 775A and can be cranked even in -17 degree celsius. It can give your car at least 120 minutes of reserve power.
Just like the previous battery, it has a sealed design that prevents spillage from the battery. It is also vibration-resistant, making it the perfect battery used for the most inconvenient location.
The only downside of the battery is the amount of amp hour it has, which is 50. So if you are using trucks, Delphi is not the best battery for it. It’s a different matter if you’re using a normal passenger car though, so everything depends on your needs.
4. Exide Edge FP-AGML5/49 Flat Plate AGM
Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t judge Exide by its size. Although it is smaller compared to other batteries, it is pretty big when it comes to CCA, as it has 850 CCAs. Such an amount will give you at least three hours of reserve capacity.
The main highlight of Exide, however, is its shelf life. Some users have reported that it lasted even longer than its warranty. One even said it lasted for seven years! So despite its small size, it is big both in CCA number and years, making it one of the best batteries for those who need a high number of CCA.
Although CCA can help you to differentiate which car works better, it is an unwritten rule for most cars to have at least the standard amount of CCA. the standard CCA for every car is one CCA for every cubic inch of the engine, to be specific the engine displacement. If the car is diesel, then it should have at least 2 CCA.
We can conclude that CCA does not determine the battery’s quality. It does, however, greatly help you especially when you live in a cold temperature. It also depends on your car. Do you use trucks, or do you use passenger cars? So, everything depends on your condition and needs. So there is no need to worry or doubt the battery of your choice! As long as it’s perfect for you, then it is the perfect and the best battery there is!
