Renew Brand Car Battery- Effects and Method

APR 12, 2021   Pageview:952

A car battery doesn't come so cheap. We all wish our car batteries could have a longer lifespan, but along the way, the performance of the battery reduces. Eventually, the battery dies, and you are forced to replace it with a new one. Well, this might prove costly.

To save you all the trouble of buying a new car battery, you should consider reconditioning your car battery. Many people throw away their batteries once their performance goes down. Most car drivers have no clue about reconditioning process.

Reconditioning car batteries allows you to preserve and refresh your batteries' function so that they can work as they used to. When looking at a reconditioned battery, it is essential to remember that they may not be charged as a brand new car battery. A fully reconditioned car battery may not last as long as you desire, but with careful driving habits and maintenance, it can power your car successfully, providing you ample charge.

Reconditioning has its benefits outlined below:

Eco-friendly- Instead of disposing of a car battery, reconditioning saves the environment from the battery's harmful effects. By not allowing more car battery acid and scrap metal to be disposed of to the environment, you help decrease your pollution levels and save the environment.

Cost-effective- it saves you the cost of purchasing a brand new battery.

You can make yourself some cash by reconditioning dead car batteries lying in the garage and sell them.

Can you recondition your car battery?

Most cars use lead-acid batteries to power them. These batteries have been designed to have a certain lifespan beyond which they deteriorate in performance. The batteries eventually die, and you may think of disposing of them. You can bring back the dead battery to its initial capacity and still operate your car, for your information.

Besides, with knowledge of reconditioning, you can perform the procedure on your own. A detailed process on car battery reconditioning is highlighted below:

First, you will need the following apparatus before reconditioning your car battery:

Apron

Battery terminal cleaner

Voltmeter

baking soda

Distilled water

Battery charger

Flathead screwdriver

Mask

Goggles

Disposable rubber gloves

The steps are:

Put on your safety gear: apron, goggles, mask, and gloves. Prepare baking soda and distilled water solution to neutralize any splashes or spills.

Remove any corrosion on your battery terminal. A paste solution of water and baking soda is made in the ratio of 1:2. Using a toothbrush, rub the solution against the battery terminals. This removes carrion. Sandpaper grit or steel wool can be used in cases where the corrosion is strong.

After removing corrosion, use a voltmeter to measure the voltage of the battery. Proper connection to the battery terminal should be ensured. Typically, the black cable is connected to the negative terminal while the red cable goes to the positive terminal. Your battery will need reconditioning if it is between 10 volts to 12.6 volts.

Remove the battery caps with a flathead screwdriver. Slowly pour out the old electrolyte solution into a container.

Prepare water and baking soda solution in the ratio of 1:2 and mix well. The baking soda solution is then filled into each battery cell. Lock the battery with caps and gently shake. Then, unlock the caps and pour out the baking soda solution.

The old battery electrolyte is replaced with an Epsom salt solution having a concentration of one molar. You can dissolve 120 grams in one liter of distilled water and mix well until no solids are left undissolved. Each cell is then refilled, and caps closed.

You then recharge the reconditioned battery at 12volts and 2 amps slow charging mode for about 24 to 36 hours. When charging is complete, take voltage reading, and if it lies around 12.4 volts to 12 6 volts, reconditioning was successful.

Finally, subject the reconditioned car battery for a load test. You can use a battery load tester. The reconditioned battery should maintain 9.5 volts for 15 seconds at half the CCA rating.

Can you recondition a sealed car battery?

The sealed lead–acid (SLA) battery, commonly known as valve-regulated lead–acid (VRLA) battery, consists of two primary types of VRLA batteries: absorbent glass mat and gel cell. Valve-regulated lead-acid cells may be made of flat plates similar to a conventional flooded lead–acid battery.

These batteries can be reconditioned as well, just like lead-acid batteries. Besides, sealed car batteries deteriorate with time because of various reasons, among them sulfation. It occurs when they are subjected to insufficient charging during regular operation. It impedes recharging; sulfate deposits, therefore, expand, cracking the plates and destroying the battery.

Pulse conditioning is done to recondition a sealed car battery that has been affected by sulfation. Pulse conditioning breaks down the sulfate crystals that are formed on the battery plates.

How do you renew your car battery?

Car batteries provide good performance for a designed period after which they get damaged. The common cause of this damage is sulfation. The car battery can be renewed using a common household chemical and a good quality "smart" charger designed for car batteries.

Below are some procedures you can try to renew your car battery:

Remove Corrosion- Battery terminals quickly corrode, compromising the connection between the battery and the cables. Disconnect the cables and apply baking soda to neutralize the corrosion. Scrub the terminals with a wire brush and dry with a clean cloth.

Replace the electrolyte- the electrolyte of a car battery can be replaced. Ingredients for this include magnesium sulfate, caustic soda, and Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and distilled water. Ten heaping tablespoons of Epsom salt should be dissolved in warm distilled water and then added to each battery cell. Then charge the battery overnight. Ensure you use caution, safety goggles, and gloves when opening and handling batteries.

Conclusion

It is paramount to familiarize yourself with car battery reconditioning techniques. This will save you the cost and trouble of purchasing a new battery. If you cannot recondition the battery by yourself, look for authorized battery dealers for reconditioning. Otherwise, do not dispose of a dead car battery to the environment.
