How to Make a Battery Charger - Alternator and Transformer

Jul 18, 2022   Pageview:1338

Battery chargers are available in the market and at various electronic shops as well. Yet several people want to make a battery charger by the means of an alternator and transformer.

The majority of people believe that an alternator can be able to charge a battery or can be converted into a good source of the battery charger. Well, yes this might be true to some extent. Since the battery charger that is made from an alternator can be able to charge the battery but at a low voltage. It does not help the batteries that are dead.

How to make a battery charger out of an alternator?

If you are in such a situation where your battery seems to be running low and you want to give it a quick boost then you can consider connecting the alternator to the battery to make a battery charger.

This can be a good way to charge up your battery but there are a few things that you need to be aware of. To make things clearer some of the ways to make a battery charger using an alternator are mentioned below.

3.2V 20Ah Low Temperature Square LiFePO4 Battery Cell

Identify the Wires Within an Alternator

The first thing that needs to be taken care of is to check the wiring that is present within the alternator. It is a very important step and should be followed religiously to avoid any further risks.

Determining the Wirings

The second step after you have checked the internal wirings is to check and locate the wires. That means you need to check which wire is the exciter that tends to be connected to the L terminal of the alternator. This is the end that is required to turn on the voltage.

Identifying the Negative and Positive

The third step is to locate the positive and negative of the battery. They are the small cables that are placed at the end of each battery.

Connecting the Battery Charging Wire

Now you have to connect the wire that is named battery charging wire. It is supposed to charge the battery and no other unit.

By following the aforementioned steps, you can easily learn the way to make a battery charger using an alternator.

How to make a battery charger from a computer power supply?

Well, if you are wondering how to make a battery charger using a computer power supply then you need to stop wondering. Since charging a battery with the help of a computer source is not a good idea. You may refer to any experienced worker or surf over the internet, you will find that in several places it is not recommended to do so.

This is because of the required voltage. The computer power is not designed in a way that can be able to charge a battery. If for instance, the battery is 12 V then the chances of the voltage being higher than 12 V. Rest if you connect the battery to the computer supply then it may feed it with the supply of heavy power.

The present power supply will identify as a too high voltage supply that will then try to lower the voltage down that is to 12 volts. During such cases, different risky scenarios can occur and cause serious damage to you or your surroundings. So, you need to be careful also.

How to make a battery charger with the help of a transformer?

If you want to make a battery charger with the help of a transformer then you need to follow the below-mentioned steps in the right order.

1.Gather the Materials

The first and the most obvious step is to gather the required materials for the making of a battery charger. A few important things that are needed are a soldering iron, computer radiator, wire with a fork, and a text plate. Depending on the conditions you can use the ammeter as well. Moreover, you also need to have a transformer node since you want to make a battery charger by using one.

2.Assembling Should be Done Right

The second step that might seem simple but is in reality quite tiring and time-consuming is the assembling step. Here, you need to work with the transformer and check the wirings inside it. Next, you have to get windings that should be connected properly and should be shorter than 2.5 mm.

3.Connecting the Components

While the forward step after the connecting of the windings is to connect both components that are primary and secondary to each other with the help of a jumper. Once it is connected and secured you will require a diode bridge and at least four of them are needed. These diodes will be connected to the plate that is known as the textolite plate.

4.Connecting the Cables

Moving further, you need to connect the cables with the diode which is called the output diode. After that, you can be able to join the battery to the transformer. However, if you need to measure the voltage then you can use a device that is named the electromagnetic head.

By following the aforementioned steps, you can easily get a hold of how to make a battery charger with the help of a transformer. Although this might seem easy it is a time-consuming process.

Hence, if you are quite interested in learning and making something on your own then you can try the mentioned steps and make a battery charger on your own. Meanwhile, if you want to complete a task using a battery charger made from a transformer then you can simply get it from a shop since it consumes less time.

Conclusion

Making a battery charger using an alternator and transformer can be tricky but not impossible. Instead, it can be a good way to learn and get more experience.  Its important that connecting process is done in a good way and you understand the working mechanism of batteries to make good battery chargers.
