What battery is good for convenient outdoor energy storage power?

APR 28, 2023   Pageview:397

For a long time, we have been using lead-acid batteries as a standard for vehicles and lithium-ion batteries as a standard for consumer electronics. A new entry in the market is the outdoor energy storage units, also known as portable power stations. Using lithium-ion batteries is unsafe while using lead-acid batteries is inefficient with these units.

That’s why specific types of batteries are used outdoors in these power storage units. This article will give you an overview of the battery types used in these products.

Outdoor convenient energy storage power uses soft pack polymer lithium battery.

The polymer lithium battery is the first battery used for outdoor energy storage power units. These are also known as lithium polymer or lithium-ion polymer batteries. The special thing about these batteries is that they come in a soft pack. So, instead of regular lithium batteries inside an aluminum shell, these batteries have a polymer shell covered with a soft liquid. These batteries make a good option for such use cases due to the following reasons:

These batteries can be charged and discharged in extreme conditions.

Typical batteries are only good for usage under normal temperature ranges. So, these batteries fail to perform under extreme weather conditions. The thing about polymer lithium battery is that it is designed to work under extreme conditions. Not only can it be discharged, but it can also be charged in extreme conditions, making them good for outdoor usage.

Using these in extreme conditions is safer.

You can charge and discharge the traditional batteries in extreme conditions, but some drawbacks exist. The biggest drawback is that they are not safe. In high-temperature conditions, a regular lithium-ion battery may catch fire. Similarly, the lead acid battery may fail to retain charge, and the performance will also significantly drop. However, polymer lithium batteries are much safer to use.

High energy density.

These batteries do not have much thickness, meaning more battery cells can fit inside tighter spaces. In addition to that, they provide higher energy density as compared to other battery types. So, high density and packing more cells in small spaces means that one polymer lithium battery will give more power, higher capacity, and longer running time than the other battery types.

Outdoor convenient energy storage power supply uses lithium iron phosphate battery.

If you look at the battery technology of the outdoor energy storage power supply, it will usually use the lithium iron phosphate battery. This selection also has a lot of technicalities behind it, starting from the basic requirements of the battery under outdoor conditions. The lithium iron phosphate battery is the best for the strict requirements of outdoor power supply units.

Here are a few ways these batteries meet the requirements of these power supply units, making them a better alternative than lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries.

Optimal Performance in Outdoor Temperatures

The outdoor power supply energy storage units need to work under varying temperatures. Since they must perform under temperatures between –30 and 60 degrees Celsius, their battery must perform under that range. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are exceptional in maintaining their performance under extreme outdoor temperatures.

Most other batteries are not designed to work at such extreme temperatures, and they lose performance and cause safety issues.

Cost-effectiveness

Cost is the second biggest reason lithium iron phosphate batteries are used in these units. When designing a product that performs under all conditions, manufacturers must maintain a user-friendly price. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are the more economical option in this case since the materials are less expensive and readily available compared to other battery materials.

Discharge Rate

One of the biggest advantages of using these batteries is their stable discharge rate. These discharge at a stable rate, but they can give a higher discharge rate than lithium batteries when needed. So, lithium iron phosphate batteries can be used for high-power demanding things and for those needing reliable power with a long backup time.

Why does outdoor convenient energy storage power supply prefer lithium iron phosphate battery?

Portable power stations and outdoor energy storage power supply units can use different lithium battery technologies. However, they specifically go for lithium phosphate batteries. Optimal performance, cost-effectiveness, and desirable discharge rates are some reasons discussed above. However, there are more reasons to go for these batteries.

Below are the details of why these batteries are used specifically in outdoor energy storage power supply units.

Environmental Impact

The most alarming thing about batteries is the amount of toxic waste they create. Even when the batteries are recyclable to a certain extent, they are not recycled. The good thing about lithium iron phosphate batteries is that they have the most non-toxic materials, including graphite, iron, and copper. So, recycling them is easier, and these batteries create less toxic waste in the environment.

Battery Life

The life span of lithium iron phosphate batteries is up to 4 times longer than other lithium batteries. It is because these batteries are more stable at extreme temperature ranges. Additionally, these batteries are resilient to being overcharged, and the self-discharge rate is also less. It means that the outdoor energy storage power supply will always be ready for an emergency no matter how long they have been charged.

Safety

The strongest reason for using lithium iron phosphate batteries instead of other lithium batteries is their safety. Since these are good to be used at extreme temperatures, the chances of facing safety hazards are less. Storing these batteries and charging them is also much safer. The insides of these batteries are non-consumable even when used incorrectly. So, with safety being an important concern, these batteries make the best choice for outdoor energy power supply.

Conclusion

Regarding outdoor energy storage units, the use case and the requirement are different. That’s why using traditional batteries with these units is not the most efficient idea. Hence, we do not use lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries in these units. We hope this article has covered the different battery types used in outdoor energy storage units.
