Mya Le Thai, a doctoral student at the University of California, Irvine, accidentally discovered a way to design a battery that retains its charge after hundreds of years of use while she was just messing around in the lab.

She discovered that a battery could endure 200,000 charging cycles and only lose 5% of its ability by using a gold nanowire in electrolyte gel instead of lithium. Her revelation could lead to the development of 400-year-long rechargeable batteries. As a result, laptops and smartphones will last longer, and there will be fewer lithium-ion batteries in landfills.

Initially, the researchers were testing nanowires for use in batteries but discovered that after multiple charging cycles, the fragile, thin wires would decompose and crack. Thai laced a set of gold nanowires in manganese dioxide and a Plexiglas-like electrolyte gel on the spur of the moment.

Because the amount of gold nanowire required to make this battery would drive up the price, it has been recommended that nickel could be used as a mass-production substitute. Unfortunately, the nano battery is still in its early stages of development, which means it will be a long time before it enters the commercial market.
