How to Desulfate a Battery With a Charger-Charging and Usage

Sulfation is one of the vital causes why batteries fail or become completely useless before time. Battery failures have become common and sulfation is one of the reasons for that. However, the sulfation can easily be reversed if it is taken care of. However, if the battery has not been used in about a year, it can be much more difficult to desulfate it.

With time, advancement brings more solutions to problems like sulfation. Now there are techniques and ways through which old or new sulfation can be completely desulfated in the shortest possible time.

So first of all, don't let a battery stall around without using it. Always use it for something and then continuously charge it. Although somehow you have got a problem with sulfation, you can do something to overcome it and desulfate the battery. 

How to Find Desulfation in the Battery:

The most common cause of sulfation is the recharging of the battery. The battery doesn't charge at all. Even charging capacity becomes very minimal.

How to build a desulfator battery charger?

There is something you need the most. Yes, you will require the Desulfator battery charger, but you have to make a solution first.

A Desulfator battery charger is a simple charger. Occasionally, we use these types of chargers to recharge the battery, especially in times of emergency. While doing the process of desulfation, you can still use the same charger, which will come in handy after adding the Epsom solution to the battery. 

Desulfation Process Overview

You need epsom salt to distil the water and then stir until it is completely dissolved. Now you can use normal room temperature water as well as boiled water. I would recommend the boiled water. Afterwards, they add the solution to the battery and then connect it to the charger for a while to fully charge the battery. Then check whether the sulfation is removed or not.

Detail Process

●Step 1: Collect Epsom Salt.If it is not available at the moment, you can get it from the market. It is very common. Afterwards, add the Epsom salts to the distilled boiled water and dissolve them. 

●Step-02. Now when the epsom solution is completely ready, then it's time to add the solution to the battery. You can use the funnel to add the solution to the battery. 

●Step-03. When you are done adding the solution, leave the battery for a certain time. Now some recommend 24 hours and others 48 hours. 

●Step 04: After 24 hours, remove the battery from the solution and wipe it down with a soft cloth until it is completely dry. 

●Step-05. This is where the battery desulfator charger comes into play. Now charge the battery using a battery charger. If you don't have a charger, then you have to get one. Plug all the terminals into the charger and leave it. When the battery is fully charged, then start using the battery. 

Desulfate Battery Voltage?

The desulfate battery voltage is the same as any other charger. It only requires a voltage that can desulfate the battery. The voltage is typically around 2.4 volts per cell, or around 14.4 volts for a 12-volt battery. However, there are other charges available that you can use. 

Time is required to desulfate a battery.

Now there is a bit of confusion when it comes to the time required to desulfate a battery. Some say 24 and some 48 hours. But it depends on the condition of the battery and how much sulfation is in the battery.

Apparently, it depends on the process of desolation as well. The majority of people use Epsom salt solution as well as baking soda solution to desulfate the battery. Both of these ways are the best when it comes to time effectiveness. 

How to charge a battery on a charger?

There is always a charger for a battery. Only the charger is used to recharge a dead battery. There are some simple ways to charge the battery through a charger. All you have to do is to connect the right terminals. 

The following are the ways to charge a battery on a charger. 

●Take your battery or the battery you want to charge. 

●Now there should be a battery charger. There are diverse types of battery chargers. For each battery, there is a unique charger that gives the battery the required voltage. 

●After getting both of these, you should know the terminals of the battery. There are two terminals on every battery. Positive is referred to as "+ or POS" and negative is referred to as "-or NEG". 

●The negative wire is black in colour and the positive is red in color. Now connect the positive wire of the charger to the battery's positive terminal and the negative to the negative terminal of the battery. 

●Then turn on the switch and the battery will start charging. Now, occasionally, each battery comprises a computer LCD that shows the battery voltage and the capacity that is charged in the battery. You can recognise the battery charge level in these situations as well. 

Can you charge a sulfated battery?

Yes, you can charge a sulfated battery, but it won't last for long. The sulfation doesn't allow electrolyte or hold the charge for a longer time. Sulfation eliminates the capacity to charge, so it becomes completely impossible to fully charge the battery. Moreover, the charging of a sulfated battery is useless and it can damage the battery as well. 

So when you find out that the battery is sulfated, then you can only desulfate it. Afterward, it can start working properly.
