Amp Rating of a Car Battery
First, let's understand what the amp rating means in your car. This is the current capacity of the battery. The larger the battery, the larger the amperage and capacity.
Car batteries have amps ranging between 550 and 1000A. However, some people may think this is not the amp/hour rating.
Several factors determine the amp rating of a car battery. So, it's not just about looking at a battery and saying it has certain amperage.

How to Measure Amps in Car Battery
An average car battery has a capacity of 48-amp hours. That means it can produce 1 amp for 48 hours. Normally, your car battery charger will send 2 amps of power every hour to the battery. It will take about 24 hours to get a fully charged battery.
Car batteries have amps ranging from 550 to 1000. The bigger the battery, the bigger the amp reading, and vice versa. So, when buying a battery, you can guess its amperage roughly and use that to determine its potential.
Calculating Amperage
You may not always know the amperage of car batteries. Some manufacturers will have it displayed clearly on the battery, while others won't show it. Fortunately, you can easily calculate the capacity, both total and current, in the battery. It's not advisable to just charge it randomly until you get a figure.
A multimeter is the best tool for the job. However, you need to first know the ohm rating of that battery. And then, apply the ohm's law by dividing the measured volt by the ohm rating on the battery.
For a standard battery, you can easily do some back-calculation. You need to measure the voltage by converting the multimeter to DC and putting the read lead to the positive terminal.
Should I Charge a Battery at 2 or 10 amps?
Charging a car battery safety does not only give you the necessary power to run the vehicle and its electronics. It also preserves the lifespan of your battery.
There are many ways of getting a battery charged. And yet the question of choosing the right charger always pops up. What is the best way to charge a battery between 2 amp and 10 amp?
The answer to this question touches on the charge time. It's all about determining how long you will need to charge the battery so that you can schedule your tasks. Also, it helps one to understand the time it takes to safely charge their batteries.
As a rule of thumb, never charge your car battery with anything beyond 20 amps. Slow charging of batteries is recommended as it gives the battery enough time to get the charge it needs.
And that is why using a 10 or below charger is battery. Repeatedly fast charging the battery can cause over-charging and reduce its life span.
So, what is the best rate? Simply put, using 10amp charges is much better than 2 amp charges.
The importance of choosing the right charger is significant when you consider the amp-hour. As stated above, a 2-amp charger gives your battery about 2 amps every hour. For a battery of 48 amps, it will take about 24 hours to get a full charge.
A 10-amp hour will take about five hours to fully charge the same battery. This seems more convenient as your battery gets fully charged much faster.
However, slow charging is much safer for the battery. So, if you want a long life for the battery, choose the 2 amps charger.
How Much Charge Does a Car Battery Need to Start?
The exact power varies depending on the specific battery and its chemistry. Generally, car batteries need 400 to 600 amps to start the engine.
For smaller engines, 150 amps should be good enough. As we mentioned earlier, it's all about the features of the battery. Larger commercial vehicles may require up to 2000 amps into their starters.
