Lives have become easier for people who don't have the power to walk anymore. Plus, people with any disease will require support to move from one place to another. Electric wheelchairs are the latest tech that has made the lives of disabled people easier. You will have to replace the battery after a while.

Following are the three types of wheelchair batteries:

Non-spillable wet batteries

Nickel-metal hybrid batteries

Dry batteries

Wheelchair Battery Replacement

You can replace the wheelchair battery yourself at home. You have to get the right battery for the wheelchair. Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can replace an electric wheelchair battery:

Locate the battery location.

There will be two batteries in the wheelchair. The first step would be locating the battery under the back of the wheelchair. You can take the battery pack out of the wheelchair. Only then will you be able to replace the batteries.

Disconnect old battery.

Now you must disconnect the old battery by disconnecting the red battery connector by pulling both batteries apart.

Remove the old batteries.

Once you disconnect the old batteries, it is time to remove them from the battery box.

Pull them apart one at a time.

While removing the batteries, try to pull them apart one at a time. If you try to take both of them out of the battery pack, you might end up damaging it.

Put new batteries.

Now it is time to put new batteries in the battery pack. Like the way, you take out the batteries one by one. Put one by one back in the battery pack.

Reattach the new batteries.

Now it is time to reattach the batteries with the wheelchair pack. While connecting the new batteries, be careful with the red connectors. Place the battery one by one in the battery holder.

Check the wheelchair.

Once you place the new batteries in the battery holder and attach them, now check whether the wheelchair is working. Yes, if the wheelchair starts to work, you have successfully replaced the batteries.

Wheelchair Battery Sizes

You won’t be able to use the same size of batteries in a different electric wheelchair. You will have batteries that would be compatible with the wheelchair. The lifespan of an electric wheelchair battery depends on the usage of the wheelchair and the battery size.

Types of Wheelchair Battery Size

Following are the three types of wheelchair battery sizes:

Group 22NF

It is a mid-range battery that you can use in an electric wheelchair and comes with absorbent glass mat technology. Plus, spill-proof manufacturing makes it one of the ideal choices for electric wheelchairs. It weighs between 15-18 pounds with a nominal voltage of 12 volts, and the capacity of Ground 22NF would be in-between 50-60 Ah range.

It will work for approximately 90 to 135 minutes. It is light in weight as compared to the other wheelchair battery sizes.

Group 34

It is a lead-acid battery with a 64 AH battery. Having 64 AH means that the operating time of this battery would be more than group 22 NF, but it would be a little heavier in weight. The output would be 12V, and you can use it for about 100-145 minutes daily. The weight of this battery would be between 37-51 pounds.

Group 24

A Group 24 battery typically has 80 Amps and AH between 140-170. The output of this electric wheelchair battery would be 12V, and the operating time of this battery size would be between 43-57 pounds. The operating time of this battery size is approximately 140-180 minutes.

Price of an Electric Wheelchair Battery

The starting price of an electric wheelchair battery would be $1300. if you get an expensive and premium quality battery for your electric wheelchair, it will be approximately $2500. An electric wheelchair battery price depends on the size of the battery that you are going to have in the wheelchair.

Following are the factors on which the wheelchair battery prices depends that you are considering to buy:

Wheelchair Battery Sizes

Wheelchair batteries are available in different sizes. Most 12V batteries are used in an electric wheelchair and are always fitted in pairs. The output would be 24V.

Amps in an Electric Wheelchair Battery

If we talk about an average wheelchair battery, it has 10 amps and 3 to 90 Ah; you can use the wheelchair for about 3 to 9 hours. You can get a battery with higher amps that can operate for more than 3 to 9 hours.

Higher Ah Wheelchair Battery

You can get a high Ah wheelchair battery to improve the running time. The battery price would be higher than a battery with an average Ah. It will be a better option for you if you live in an area where you run out of battery for a long time, and you know you will require your wheelchair, then you can get a higher Ah battery for your electric wheelchair. It will be an expensive purchase for your electric wheelchair.

The lifespan of the battery

If you are going to get a battery for your electric wheelchair, you must first ask about the battery's lifespan. How long would the battery last? You will have to replace it after a while but try to get a battery that would last the long for your wheelchair. The battery's lifespan also depends on your usage of a wheelchair but still ask about the battery's lifespan.

The Capacity of the Electric Wheelchair Battery

How long would the battery last per day if you use your electric wheelchair for 8 hours? You should ask about the capacity of the wheelchair battery as well. So another important question would be about the battery.

Final Words:

Electric wheelchair batteries have made life easier for disabled people and those requiring a wheelchair in hospitals. You can replace the batteries yourself at home. We have already discussed the steps for replacing the electric wheelchair battery above. Follow the steps but ensure you get the right type and size of the battery. Always replace both batteries of the wheelchair together.
