Do I need a new battery if I left my lights on? Introduction and Usage

Nov 17, 2022   Pageview:619

It often happens to many car owners when they accidentally leave their car headlights on. What happens next makes it much more difficult for you to restart your car's engines due to the dead battery.

Sometimes the lights don't make a big mess, but if your car takes 2-3 seconds to start, it could cause a problem. The reason is that when the lights are on, the battery tends to decrease its capacity, which means it doesn't have enough energy or charge to start your car afterwards. Charging your battery with a third-party charger is the best option.

Many people get confused about whether to change the battery when they leave their lights on and the battery doesn't work afterwards. You may not need to change your battery, especially when you know your battery is new. Just after checking the water level and charging it again, it will be enough to start giving output again.

If your battery is old and you leave your lights on, there are certainly a lot of chances that you have completely wrecked your battery. You have to go through all the repair processes. So in this case, you might need a brand new battery, even if you repair the old one. It will not work for much longer. As a result, it is preferable to make a one-time payment for a long-term solution.

Other than that, if you don't want to face any of those battery problems, always be careful about your headlights. Never leave them on, otherwise you will have to go through the same fate again. It is an honest mistake that happens to car owners, but make it a habit to always check your headlights before leaving your car.

How long does it take for a car battery to die if you leave the lights on?

Most of the time, it depends on the battery's lifespan. Some batteries have larger capacities and can run the light for many hours. Although the average car battery will take about thirty to ninety minutes to completely drain your battery, even if your battery is strong and your car is in good condition engine-wise, the battery will still start the engines. If it is not, then you need to recharge the battery.

In an average car battery, the battery capacity is about 45 Ah. The light voltage of the car is 12 volts. So if you have left the interior car light on, it will take 27 hours to drain the battery. This is the mathematical value. If you have a fancy car with fancy HID lights and a normal or old battery, then it might take an hour or a half to completely drain your battery. In fact, some batteries completely get sabotaged, in which case you will have to buy new ones afterwards.

If this type of situation happens to you while you are outside and you don't have an extra charger or an electric grid to charge the battery, then the best alternative is to jumpstart the car. You can request that someone connect their car battery to yours and jump-start it. Other than this, there is no possible solution to get things going besides this one.

What happens if you leave the lights on in your car overnight?

The worst thing that can happen is that it can drain your battery, which will cause starting problems for your car. Draining the battery means the car doesn't have the capacity to run anything. As we know, engines require a lot of power to start. Even the battery used in cars is only capable of starting the engines. When the engines start, it switches to charging mode. When we use the interior lights and other electronics, they use the battery charge, but at the same time, the alternator or motor of the car is charging the battery.

Similarly, leaving the lights on without starting the engine is equivalent to having a dead battery. In fact, it lowers the capacity of the battery, which will not work the same or will not give it the lifespan it needs to have.

Will leaving the lights on ruin the battery?

They say the car battery is only made for starting engines. However, leaving your car lights on will almost certainly damage the battery. A small light, such as a glove box or indicator light, can actually drain your car battery. In these cases, jump-starting the car or charging the battery with an external charger is the best option.

Luckily, modern and fancy cars nowadays turn off the light automatically when the owner of the car forgets about it. This saves a lot of battery capacity and is enough to start the engines again. However, many people still use those cars, which do not have those facilities. So the best alternative for them is to either never let yourself forget about the interior or any other lights, or you need to charge the battery or jump start your car if you want to make things move forward.

Some experts even suggest that if you find out about the lights and take care of them quickly, then your car battery may not suffer a lot. So the moment you realise that you have left your car lights on, quickly disconnect your battery, connect it to a charger, and charge it. Or, if you are not at home, jump start the battery and leave the engines on for a while so the battery gets charged. If you do those things quickly, you may save your battery from worse conditions.

Final Viewpoints

Never leave your car lights on; otherwise, it will give you a lot of trouble. These kinds of things happen when you're out with your friends or when you're busy. But the best thing to do is to make it a habit to always check your car lights first and then get out of your car. This is the best way to save your car battery.
