Batteries are quite expensive, right? Unfortunately, they are not everlasting. They are designed with a specific lifespan, after which you will need to replace them.
But since they are not cheap, many people find it hard just to throw them away for recycling. Or perhaps you don’t have the money to buy a new battery just yet.
There are different ways to get more juice from your battery, and one of them is reconditioning. It is a simple and cost-effective way of bringing more life to your battery and avoiding spending a lot on new ones.
So, how do you recondition a battery? By using certain chemicals that we shall be discussing here.
Keep reading to discover more.
Battery Reconditioning Chemicals Epsom Salt
Epson salt is one of the most common and cost-effective chemicals for reconditioning batteries. It is cheap, easy to find, and extremely easy to use.
So, if you are stingy about paying huge sums of money on brand-new batteries, Epsom salt should come in handy. Even if you are new to reconditioning batteries, you will always find a way to work around this chemical.
Why Use Epsom Salt
As you may have already guessed, there are different methods of reconditioning batteries. This is a good way to avoid spending too much money on new cells. You can save 25% to 50% on the retail cost of a new standard 12V car battery cost.
Here are some of the benefits of using Epsom salt.
Save money. You will be surprised to discover just how many of your neighbors have?
Batteries that are not damaged but not in use. You can collect even ten batteries. Instead of spending around $100 on new batteries, you can spend $20 to $50 when you recondition these batteries, which is good money.
Waste reduction. Millions of people use batteries that they don’t know how to dispose of properly once used. They end up throwing the batteries just anywhere, which is harmful to the environment. Battery reconditioning is the best way to recycle them and avoid waste piling.
Earn. You can earn some cash when you recondition batteries. For instance, you can ask your neighbors for their old batteries and recondition them for a fee. And if you need a new battery, this could be a good way to save on buying one.
Epsom salt is an inexpensive, readily available chemical that will make your project extremely easy. You don’t even have to struggle too much to find other materials.
Deep Cycle Battery Reconditioning Chemicals
Battery reconditioning is the process of breathing new life into dead battery cells. It is used when you want to get a full-health battery without buying a brand-new one.
Batteries die because lead sulfate crystals form on the plates as it charges and discharge. These crystals make it hard for the battery to charge and discharge effectively. This is where we can use reconditioning.
Battery reconditioning is like cleaning off the excess crystals in each battery cell, restoring their life. It also replenishes the electrolyte.
For the process, you will need the following:
Baking soda
Epsom salt
Distilled water
It is extremely important that you mix these chemicals properly to create the right paste.
Epsom salt is the main chemical used in this process. It is cheaper and more readily available, which is why you will not easily get any other chemicals.
Deep cycle batteries offer a constant and reliable power supply. They are some of the safest batteries on the market today as they are popular in cars.
When your battery dies, you can easily rejuvenate it using Epson salt. Follow the process we have discussed below, and you should have a fully rejuvenated battery.
Other experts recommend the use of baking soda and Asprin. Although this method is not as reliable as using baking soda and Epsom salt, it is still worth trying.
Battery Reconditioning Method
Battery reconditioning is a good way to get more life from your battery without spending much money. Instead of throwing away the battery, you can use this method to restore its health.
It all begins by knowing what to do. There are many opinions on the internet concerning this method, most of which are too complex. We have broken the method down for you below. Check it out.
How to Recondition Batteries Using Epsom Salt
Now that you know why Epsom salt is ideal for reconditioning batteries, how do you do it? Here are the steps you can follow for effective reconditioning.
You will need the following:
Epsom salt
Baking soda
Distilled water
A toothbrush
Steelwool or sandpaper
Voltmeter
Bucket
Load tester
Reconditioning charger
Screwdriver
Funnel
Safety attire
Follow these steps:
1.Protect yourself properly using goggles, an apron, and gloves
2.Disconnect and remove your battery from the car.
3.Clean the terminals of any corrosion. Use a mixture of baking soda and distilled water for this process. The sticky and paste-like solution should take out any corrosion easily.
4.Use the toothbrush to rub and clean the terminals.
5.Open the battery caps using your screwdriver. Keep them safe to avoid losing.
6.Tilt the battery gently to pour out the electrolyte in a bucket, and then pour a measure of the baking soda into the bucket to neutralize the acid.
7.Pour some of the baking soda into each cell through a funnel. Close the caps and shake the battery properly.
8.Heat ? of the distilled water so it can dissolve more easily. Dissolve a measure of the Epsom salt into the water and stir completely and then pour it into the battery via the funnel. Close the caps and connect to a 12V car battery.
9.Put the battery on slow charge mode for 12 to 24 hours. The battery should reach a voltage ready of 12.4 to 12.43.
10.Test your battery using the load tester.
If the battery does not reach that voltage, you will have to discharge completely and charge again. It is very important that it hits that voltage.
